Setting summer job expectations
According to a recent survey of 1,000 employers, SnagAJob.com found that 76% of employers plan on completing their summer hiring by the end of May. A quick check of the calendar will reveal that, if you don’t have a summer gig locked and loaded now, it’s time to start sweating and doubling your efforts. No matter what the temperature is.
For those of you who’ve nailed down summer jobs, or are still scrambling, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
Vacation etiquette
If you plan on taking a summer vacation that’s more than a long weekend, you should clear this with your boss before accepting a job. Be honest and upfront. Some managers may be able to work with you, and if not, getting caught in a lie may cost you future employment with that company.
(FYI: Most people calling in sick to work for a week return with a dark tan and vacation photos.)
Extending your stay
If you’ve proven yourself to be a capable employee, there may be an opportunity to parlay your summer job into an ongoing gig. Be sure to tell your boss you’re interested in returning if possible. Just think of how much time you’ll save during next year’s summer job search!

If you’re a night owl, do you really think you can wake up to open the diner by 5 a.m.? If your family or friends have you warned about a dishonest, unscrupulous employer, will you listen?
