October 1, 2013 is more than the beginning of the first partial government shutdown in 17 years, it also happened to mark the first day of open enrollment for health exchanges within the Affordable Care Act.
Before the ACA deadline, we polled job seekers on Snagajob.com to find out just how much they knew about the new legislation. We posed the following question: do you understand how the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) will impact you? Yes or no? These are some of the results we collected:
- 69.21 percent of job seekers did not understand the effect the ACA would have on them; 30.78 percent of those respondents were between the ages of 18 and 24.
- Nearly half of the job seekers who voted “NO” were older job seekers; 30.56 percent were between the ages of 45 and 55, or older.
- Younger job seekers, ages 16-17, understood the impact of ACA the most, more so than any other age group, at 41 percent answering “YES.”
- Poll respondents older than 55 understood the impact of the legislation the least, coming in at 25 percent answering “YES.”
If these poll results are any indication, job seekers and hourly employees need more information on the ACA and how it affects them. Exchanges are open from October 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014, so there’s still some time to get your employees informed and prepared; our job seeker site has information and tips providing readers with everything they need to know about the basics of the ACA, complete with a link to the official site of the exchange marketplace.
As an employer, take the time to answer any questions those who work for you might have about the possible changes in their insurance. Your employees will thank you for helping make the ACA easier to digest.
