MarketWatch: Consumer unease keeps a lid on retailers’ holiday hiring plans

As retailers ready for their most important selling period of the year against the backdrop of many disappointing second-half outlooks, the annual rush to add seasonal workers this holiday looks to present a mixed picture.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. WMT  on Monday said it plans to add 55,000 seasonal workers this holiday, 10% more than last year. The increase reflected the company’s store growth in the past year, spokesman Kory Lundberg said, adding the company also took a cue from last year and said it could do “an even better job of servicing customers” by adding seasonal hiring in some locations.
