Small Business Saturday® spotlight: Darryl Flick of O’Virginia

Small Business Saturday is November 30, and we’re so excited about shopping small that we’re devoting the entire week to our very own local small business owners. From November 25-29, we’ll be featuring profiles on small business owners based in Snagajob’s hometown, Richmond, Va. Every day will be another chance to learn more about men and women doing the work they love while contributing to their community.

One of the first small business owners Snagajob talked to was Darryl Flick, founder of the Carytown boutique O’Virginia. When we weren’t being distracted by the unofficial shop mascot ( a big friendly dog named Cody), Flick told us about how he’s learned to trust his hiring instincts as well as what he enjoys about the holiday season.

As a small business owner, what’s your favorite part of the holiday season?
People who give gifts they’re excited about and actually seeing people who are excited about giving gifts. Everything in my store is U.S.-made first, with a focus on Virginia after that. We even track the jobs so we know that we represent conservatively 200 U.S. jobs. I do get a little emotional when I look around the store and realize that 200 hundred people actually have a job this Christmas.

What tools do you rely on during the hiring/recruiting process?
Word-of-mouth and horse sense; I’ve learned over the years to trust your gut. If something doesn’t feel or sound right, you’re probably right. You may not be able to put your finger on it and it’s not common sense, but I would rather be here seven days a week than just hire a warm body.

Which items in your shop are you most excited for the holidays?
Blown glass and dog treats, which seems silly but is so fun. And the field tester did a good job with those.

What is your favorite part of being a small business owner?
When people come up to me and say, “You really changed my holiday,” because they found something they thought they would never find in a store.
