Standing out as a small business

Small Business Saturday® is November 30 and small business owners all over the country are coming up with ways to encourage shoppers to buy local. Special discounts, giveaways and offers are just a few of the ways stores are getting customers excited to Shop Small®.

But what steps can small business owners take to get the same sense of excitement when trying to recruit new employees? With Small Business Saturday around the corner, we thought we’d share a few tips on how small business owners can stand out to job seekers, not just on November 30 but all year-round.

Spread the word. When it comes to getting the word out about open positions in your business, go beyond the your store front window to let people know you’re hiring. Consider working with a third-party partner that can magnify the reach of your “help wanted” sign and communicate directly with job seekers in your area. Not only will it make the recruiting process easier and more efficient, it will also let applicants know how determined you are in finding your next qualified employee.

Brag about benefits. There are a lot of perks that can come with working for a small business, such as flexible hours, accessible locations and competitive pay, just to name a few. Listing these benefits in your job postings can give you the edge you need in the hourly marketplace. So if there’s an aspect of working for your business that you want to brag about, don’t be shy. It might be exactly what you need to grab the attention of a great applicant.

Be local, hire local. One of the best parts of owning a small business is the contributions your store is making to the community. Spread the gospel of local to job seekers by explaining the various ways a small business can help a neighborhood thrive, including the jobs it creates and the money it brings into the community. Instilling that passion in your search for employees will inspire even more passion in job seekers.
