It’s that time of year: Winter decorations start hitting the shelves ridiculously early, and retailers announce their hiring plans for the super-spending season.

Holiday-help hires will drop about 7 percent from last year’s 12-year high, according to consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. There should be about 700,000 jobs, mostly filled in October. Some chains, such as Toys R Us, have already begun hiring for the end of the year.
