1. Meet the minimum requirements for Google job search

If you want your jobs to show up at all in the new Google job search results tool, they need to meet technical requirements outlined by Google. This set of requirements boils down to 3 core things: 

  • You need a separate, crawlable job details page for each open position at each location
  • Jobs pages need to be marked up with schema.org job posting structured data
  • You’re sending frequent XML sitemap updates to Google

 

2. Add extra details to your job descriptions

In addition to the minimum requirements, there’s a lot of additional job data you can add to postings and HTML markup to help you rank higher in Google job search results. Google Search values “completeness of data” and is likely to rank your job higher when it has more of these “Recommended” job data fields.

Examples of these optional Google jobs fields include (check out the full list of required and recommended job posting markup here): 

  • Employment type (full-time, part-time)
  • Salary or hourly pay rate
  • Education requirements
  • Experience requirements
  • “Valid thru” date
  • Work hours
  • Industry
  • Skills

3. Follow Google SEO practices

When it comes to landing on Google search engine results pages (SERPs), there are a number of optimization techniques. Two that help employers beat out other companies for the top position are 1) relevance and 2) authority.

 

1. Relevance means the content on your job details page needs to match what job seekers are searching for. For employers, this might mean changing job titles so they more closely match the keywords job seekers are actually searching on.

Think Bartender moreso than “Beverage Dispenser Associate.” However, it’s also important to note that Google’s machine learning capability will display job searches for similar jobs. Your jobs may still show up in Google job search results, but they may just not rank as high.

 

2. Authority may be a little harder to achieve against competition. A site’s authority ranking is based on a number of factors like how relevant the content is, where it’s linking to, who’s linking to it, how much traffic it gets, how often content is updated and even how the code is written. The higher the authority ranking, the higher a relevant job will show up in the search results.
