Most inspirational job search story? Jeremy Lin’s recent celebrity not enough for a win
Snagajob poll finds basketball star’s rise less inspirational than homeless man turned stockbroker
RICHMOND, Va. – As if there was any doubt that Linsanity was over, a recent survey has found that the New York Knicks guard is in the back of the pack when it comes to improbable, come-from-behind stories. Instead, Chris Gardner – the homeless father turned stockbroker whose story was portrayed in the 2006 movie “Pursuit of Happyness” based on the autobiography with the same title – can lay claim to the “most inspirational job search story,” according to a recent Snagajob survey.
Snagajob, the largest hourly employment network for job seekers and employers, asked members and site visitors to identify the most inspirational job search story. Nearly half (45 percent) of respondents found Gardner’s rise from homeless father to the eventual owner of a multi-million dollar brokerage firm to be the most inspirational. Meanwhile, Lin – an undrafted player who had been waived from two NBA teams and frequently demoted to the NBA’s Development League before a sensational February for the Knicks – scored just 8 percent in the Snagajob poll, coming in last among four candidates.
“Jeremy Lin has received so much media and fan attention that we were surprised that job seekers didn’t seem to relate to his recent success,” said Rick Parker, vice president of marketing for Snagajob. “When it comes to rising from the complete bottom, Chris Gardner’s story is incredibly inspirational. Either way, both men deserve a tremendous amount of credit for what they have accomplished.”
In other choices, 33 percent found that J.K. Rowling’s ascension from welfare mom to “Harry Potter” author was the second most inspirational job search story. Jim Carrey’s transition from living in a Volkswagen bus to A-list movie star came in third (14 percent).
The non-scientific, online poll of more than 1,000 responses was conducted Mar. 9 through Apr. 6, 2012.
