When you’re desperate to pull in some extra money, it’s easy to talk yourself into taking a job you’ll hate. Before you commit to spending your weekends with the roadkill cleanup crew, think hard about what you really want in a part time job. Here are four questions to ask yourself when deciding which part time job is right for you.
What type of part-time work would you enjoy?
Your personality plays a huge role in what job is right for you. If you’re a nature lover, look for jobs that give you the opportunity to be outside: think landscaping or nursery work. If you’re a fashionista who plans to invest your entire paycheck in your wardrobe, then retail jobs may be right up your alley. Restaurant jobs are great for extroverts who don’t mind being on their feet, while admin and office jobs are ideal if you’re the quiet type who likes to work independently.
What hours can you work?
Most employers are looking for around 20 hours a week from their part-time employees. Many jobs require some night and weekend shifts, so the first step in your job search should be to write down your schedule and plan out how much time you can devote to working. If this part-time position will be a second job, make sure it won't conflict with your regular job. Don't commit to a schedule you can't handle!
How far will you travel for a part-time job?
We probably don’t have to tell you that working closer to home saves you gas money—and over time, the cost of a long commute will cut into your earnings. Some workers are willing to make the trek for a job they really love, but most job seekers prefer to work within five miles of home. It’s up to you to decide how far is too far to drive to work.
How much money do you need?
This is the best part of a job—the cash, the moola, the green. Take a look at your budget and figure out how much you need to bring in per week. Ask yourself what your goals are: to support your family, pay off debt or finance the restoration of your '72 El Camino?
