Jobs in Retail Sales

It’s more than just talking to the mannequins all day. Sales jobs require a friendly personality and the ability to multi-task.

Have you ever been told you could sell ice to an Eskimo? Were you the top seller of Girl Scout cookies in your troop? Check out these sales jobs and who knows? You may be the next Donald Trump.

What do sales associates do?

You don’t have to be as pushy as a used car salesman to work it in retail, but the job does require you to help customers find sizes and styles or check the stock room for merchandise not on the floor. Your main goal is to generate revenue for your store, so retail managers stress the importance of providing courteous and efficient service in order to remain competitive. “Up-selling” is another tactic sales associates use to make a bigger sale; for example, if a customer is going buy a pair of jeans, try to interest them in a belt or a top to match. Also be sure you’re knowledgeable about your store’s products as you may need to describe features, demonstrate their use or show various models.

Sales associates can expect to be a jack of all trades, so to speak; in addition to selling out on the floor, you may be asked to work at the cash register, wrap gifts for customers, answer phones, stock shelves, prepare displays or arrange for mailing or delivery of purchases.

What are the working conditions?

Employees in this trade typically work in a clean, well-lit store with a stock room full of extra merchandise not out on the sales floor. Most salespersons are required to stand for long periods of time, so unless you’re Carrie Bradshaw and live in stiletto heels and pumps, you may want to invest in some comfortable shoes. Your feet will thank you later. You will also need to be available on nights, weekends and holidays, the busiest time for retailers, so you may need to reschedule that Christmas vacation in Cabo.

What skills do I need and how can I get promoted?

To excel in this position, consider the three “Ps:” be patient, presentable, and punctual. Employers are looking for someone who can stay focused and levelheaded with difficult customers and during times of heavy traffic. They also want someone who presents a pleasant appearance and personality and is easily approachable. The ability to work well and communicate with others is also a must. Finally, always be on time—when the store is packed, employers can’t afford to be shorthanded because you had to catch the end of a “Saved by the Bell” rerun. Sorry, Slater.

There are no educational requirements for this job, but employers typically prefer a high school diploma for their full-time employees. Training occurs on site and a background check may be performed, especially if you’re selling high-priced items like jewelry or electronics.  You don’t even need a college degree to advance in this position; many employees are promoted to management after gaining enough experience.

Show me the money!

Salespersons generally receive hourly wages, commissions, or a combination of both, but the real bonus is in the employee discount. Most retailers offer their workers discounted merchandise, and the savings vary depending on the items. This discount will come in handy, because many clothing and department stores require their employees to invest in store merchandise to wear on the job. This transforms workers into live mannequins, because who better to show off the latest fashions than you?
