Do you want to know the secret to landing a gig through SnagAJob.com? Do you want to learn the best ways to look attractive to our potential employers and stand out among your fellow job seekers? Does this article already sound like a bad, late-night infomercial?
We apologize, and don’t worry, we’ll give you this information and more without asking you to call a 1-800 number or pay a dime for shipping and handling.
We’ve talked with literally dozens of our hundreds of esteemed employers to learn what they’re looking for in potential new workers, and we’ve combined these insights with some of our own findings into the advice below. So whether this is your first time on SnagAJob.com or you’re a return visitor, we encourage you to read on and kick your job search into high gear.
1. Draw the complete picture.
Don’t make employers connect the dots with a spotty, partially completed profile. While it’s possible to register and “complete” your profile in a jiffy, if you linger longer and spend some quality time writing a comprehensive profile, you’re greatly improving your chances of getting hired right off the bat.
Do you think a certain job experience might be irrelevant to your current job search? Include it anyways. Think those online business classes you took a few years back aren’t worth mentioning? Think again. Voluntary experiences are also important to include.
By the way, it wouldn’t hurt to dust off the dictionary and proofread your profile (and your applications) before submitting. And if your email address would make your grandma blush, create a new G-rated email account. (Hotmail and other websites offer free email accounts.)
By not giving employers an accurate picture of all you have to offer, you’re selling yourself short. Also, by showing you took the initiative to complete your profile, you’re already giving potential employers a hint of your solid work ethic. Go you!
-- Register or sign in to complete your profile.
2. Cast your net wide.
Did you find your dream job on SnagAJob.com, and now you’re just crossing your fingers, and hoping that the employer contacts you? With 70 million hourly workers out there, there is a ton of competition, especially for the prime gigs. In other words, there’s a good chance that your dream job could also be the dream job of 1,427 other job seekers. That’s why it’s a wise move to find and apply to more than one job that suits your skills and interests. The good news is that we add new jobs and employers every day, so if you don’t see another dream job today, check back tomorrow. And the next day.
-- Search and apply for jobs.
3. Don’t be a stranger.
With each passing month, you’re picking up new skills, experiences and interests. Shouldn’t you be trying to impress and woo potential employers with all these new developments? Or at least make sure you update your new phone number? Your profile should be a work in progress that you’re always keeping tabs on. Plus, if you haven’t updated your profile in a year, you couldn’t look lazier to employers unless you showed up for an interview wearing bunny slippers.
-- Sign in to update your profile.
