Deli Clerk
SUMMARY OF JOB
Stocks and maintains merchandise in the deli according to established procedures and standards in order to insure merchandise is available for customer purchases and to generate necessary sales and profits.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Keeps deli service and prepared areas well stocked and appealing at all times to meet customer requests. Smiles and greets customers, makes suggestions, handles any customer’s special requests, provides samples, resolves customer complaints or problems in a prompt and courteous manner.
- Insures that merchandise in display cases is fresh, in saleable condition and has been properly priced with the correct signage. Handles spoiled and damaged product or product that is close to expiration code according to established procedures and standards.
- Slices meats and cheeses to meet customer preferences. Weighs and wraps sliced foods and applies sticker showing price and weight. Prepares and cooks/bakes ready to eat food such as chicken, pizzas, hoagies, etc. and sandwiches to individual order of customers.
- Prepares deli platters of sliced meats and cheeses and vegetable trays.
- Responsible for conditions in the department. Follows cleaning schedules and department sanitation guidelines to insure that work areas, counters, display cases, etc. and well maintained and clean. Disposes of trash in proper manner.
- Helps deli manager control inventory through proper ordering. Helps minimize losses by returning products to refrigeration if left out and by watching for shoplifters. May help receive, unload and check incoming product, which may require using certain equipment such as jacks (must be 18 years of age and trained to safely operate any kind of power equipment).
- Reports shortages and overages to manager.
- May also be called upon to assist in other departments, especially in the front-end
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desirable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
Must have strength and dexterity to lift 60 pounds with ease. Must know how to properly and safely operate equipment utilized in moving merchandise (must be 18 and trained in order to use power driven equipment). Experience dealing with customers helpful, however, this position is considered entry level.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works mostly on sales floor. Frequent interaction with customers. Must occasionally go into coolers or work around ovens.
