Produce Clerk
SUMMARY OF JOB
Stocks and maintains produce department according to established procedures and standards in order to insure merchandise is available for customer purchases and to generate the necessary sales and profits.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Keeps produce department well stocked and appealing at all times to meet customer requirements. Must be knowledgeable on all produce. Smiles and greets customers, answers customer questions, handles special requests such as filling orders for fruit baskets and resolves customer complaints or problems in a prompt and courteous manner.
- Unpacks cartons and crates of merchandise, cleans and trims produce, stocks counters, bins, and tables with new merchandise. Insures merchandise is in saleable condition which requires rotating stock to insure freshness. Insures that all merchandise has been properly priced with the correct signage.
- Assists produce manager in building attractive displays. Handles spoiled and damaged product, new items and discontinued items accordingly to established procedures and standards.
- Responsible for conditions on the sales floor and in the cooler, prep room and backroom. Follows department’s cleaning schedule and sanitation guidelines to issue that all work areas, aisles, tables, display cases, etc., are maintained and clean and that all trash and crates are disposed of in proper manner.
- Helps produce manager control inventories through proper ordering. Helps minimize department losses by watching for shoplifters and by reporting any irregularities to store management. May help receive, unload and check incoming merchandise, which may require using certain equipment such jacks (must be 18 years of age and trained to safely operate any kind of power equipment). Reports shortages and overages to manager.
- May also be called upon to assist in other departments, especially in the front-end.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desirable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
Must have strength and dexterity to lift 60 pounds with ease. Must know how to properly and safely operate equipment utilized in moving merchandise (must be 18 and trained in order to use power driven equipment). Experience dealing with customers helpful, however, this position is considered entry level.
