A&P Supermarkets Pharmacy Technician Job Overview

 

Pharmacy Technician:

Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist on duty provides customer service and assistance with the inventory, preparation, computer processing and distribution of medications within the Pharmacy department. Assists with these processes and other clerical functions, enabling the pharmacists to focus on providing customers with therapeutic drug monitoring and informational/ educational services requiring a pharmacist’s expertise and training.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Able to perform all responsibilities of a Pharmacy Clerk
  • Receives written prescriptions or telephone refill requests and records information necessary to prepare prescriptions.
  • Enters prescription details into the computer to update patient medical record (including Third party information), and ensures that customer has received the Privacy Policy and is aware of certain HIPAA-based patient rights.
  • Knows all procedures & regulations for entering prescription information into the computer system and getting the prescription ready to be processed for fill
  • If permitted by State Regulations, selects correct medication to dispense, counts or pours into container, labels and prices prescription, and presents to Pharmacist for review.
  • Places completed prescriptions in the pick-up area after Pharmacist review and approval.
  • Files written prescription forms once the prescriptions have been dispensed.
  • Provides customer service to pharmacy patients by ringing up orders, recording prescription purchases in a log, and answering questions that do not require a pharmacist’s expertise or judgment.
  • Ensures the limited use and disclosure of Protected Health Information of pharmacy customers and complies with the Company’s policies regarding HIPAA legislation, the Privacy Rule, and all other applicable state and federal laws.
  • Assists customers in locating OTC products
  • Orders, receives, stocks, and stores medications and other pharmacy related items.
  • Maintains inventory, prepares orders, and stocks all pharmacy department supplies, packages, and labels needed in the department.
  • Performs clerical and administrative functions including preparation of insurance claims, billing, verification of payments, preparation of weekly invoice statement and reconciliation of weekly receiving log.
  • Cleans equipment and work areas in the pharmacy and performs other housekeeping duties.
  • Assists Pharmacists with training and the continuing education of Pharmacy Clerks and other Technicians, including HIPAA Privacy training for all associates who handle or access Protected Health Information.

SPECIAL SKILLS, TRAINING, OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma required, Associates Degree preferred
  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification  (CPhT) is preferred but not required and/or one or more years of on-the-job Pharmacy Tech experience passing A&P Technician Test
  • Basic computer skills
