Job Summary
The Laboratory Associate is a non-exempt position reporting to a Supervisor or Laboratory Manager. Under direct and constant supervision of licensed personnel, assists with responsibilities associated with routine and specialty clinical testing. Provides general support for the laboratory following established policies and procedures.
Job Accountabilities
Laboratory Associate activities may include all or part of the following duties:
1. Maintains inventory of consumable items including reagents and supplies, unpacks, logs, dates and stores reagents/supplies upon receipt and properly rotates stock for use.
2. Demonstrates initiative in making suggestions to improve efficiency and productivity and provides consistent feedback.
The following Laboratory Associate duties will be conducted under general supervision and control of a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS):
1. Prepares protocols, logs or other appropriate documents for routine and/or special assignments.
2. Organizes and processes clinical specimens accurately. Identifies worksheet, computer and specimen problems and demonstrates ability to either resolve or elevate to licensed personnel appropriately.
3. Enters or transfers printed or written data to the computer for data reduction. Prepares and organizes written data, printouts, and other documents for licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist review. Tallies workload data and prepares reports as assigned.
4. Enters or transfers printed or written Quality Control and/or Quality Assurance data for review by licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist review.
The following Laboratory Associate duties will be conducted under direct and constant supervision of a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist:
1. Prepares testing equipment, assists with preventative maintenance. Reports identified problems to a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
2. Prepares reagents and controls using automated or fixed volume measuring devices. Maintains complete and accurate records of reagents or media.
3. Assists a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist with multiple routine and specialty assays utilizing established procedures.
4. Assists in phase-in reagents according to established procedures. Prepares documentation for licensed scientist review and approval.
5. Support the CLS Training Program.
Job Requirements
1. BS/BA degree in Biological Science or Chemistry (other life science degree coursework will be evaluated) from an accredited college or university preferred or high school diploma with a minimum seven (7) years of laboratory experience required.
2. Computer skills: word processing skills using Windows based software (Word, Excel, etc.). Other automation skills helpful. Typing skills desirable.
3. Lifts light to moderately heavy objects. The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects. Objects in the weight range of 1 to 10 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects in the weight range of 11 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried occasionally and objects in the weight range of 26 to 50 pounds are seldom lifted and carried. Objects exceeding 50 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance.
4. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time; requires long hours of eye and hand coordination.
5. Must be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and maintain production and quality standards determined by the department.
6. Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and procedures outlined in the Environmental Health & Safety Manual.
7. Must be able to perform repetitive tasks with dominant hand frequently to constantly throughout the day.
