Work Environment and Physical Demands

Most Janitors work indoors, but some work outdoors part of the time. The work can be physically demanding and some tasks, such as cleaning bathrooms and trash rooms, can be dirty and unpleasant.   Janitors and building cleaners required physical strength to be able to lift and move cleaning materials and heavy equipment.  Cases of liquid cleaner and equipment are often very heavy, so workers should be able to lift without injuring their back.  Janitors and building cleaners required stamina to be able to spend most of their time on their feet—lifting or moving supplies or equipment and tools—without tiring.

Training

Most janitors learn on the job.  Beginners typically work with a more experienced janitor, learning how to use and maintain machines, such as wet-and-dry vacuums and floor buffers and polishers.  They may also learn on the job how to repair minor problems with plumbing.

Advancement

Advancement opportunities are often limited to those who remain on the job for a long period of time. Because workers interact with all personnel, advancement opportunities are many for those that excel and show interest and initiative. Many workers start as helpers and progress into other positions as they learn basic techniques. After gaining experience, some workers advance to a variety of opportunities that include lead and supervisory positions.
