Requirements

DESCRIPTION: Thank you for your interest. This position is for a Litigation Assistant in a very busy plaintiffs' employment discrimination boutique law firm in downtown Long Beach. QUALIFICATIONS: Prefer college GPA of 3.6+. Past positions of responsibility of any type a plus. Will train. Good position for a future law student seeking an understanding of a litigation career. (Attorneys may also apply.) JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Under supervision of an attorney, you handle 20-30 plaintiffs' employment discrimination cases at any one time, often with the assistance of another Legal Assistant. Typical WEEKLY priority tasks done by Legal Assistant, under the supervision of an attorney, include the following. Performance is measured according to the following criteria and reported back to each Legal Assistant approximately every six weeks, with appropriate adjustments expected: (1) Prepare a list of 15-25 facts for client to memorize and articulate in advance of client's deposition and spend at least 45 minutes reviewing the key facts (after attorney's 2+ hour prep session with the client) including your having client read the list out loud six times. (2) Call witnesses 90 minutes per day and maintain an average of 1.5 supportive signed witness statements per case. (3) About twice per week, in 3-4 hours review a few hundred pages of document productions and select about 20 documents to use as potential deposition exhibits, in each of two cases. (4) After attorney takes depositions and provides assistant a list, assistant issues fact-specific document requests to the adverse party and identifies additional persons to depose, in each of two cases. (5) Interview new client for at least 2 hours and create a 2-6 page timeline of facts and draft a complaint. (6) Propound and respond to written discovery in 1-2 cases. (7) Meet all legal deadlines. (8) Avoid getting caught up in emails, scheduling issues and debates with opposing counsel and other minutiae that takes time away from the above client-priorities, which priorities add to and protect value of the case for our client. (But Legal Assistant handles all attorney's emails and phone calls to the maximum extent possible so attorney can concentrate on attorney's own priorities.) Candidates who readily adjust their actual performance to meet these periodically refined criteria tend to succeed here, and vice-versa. If your traits are a good fit for this performance-based environment, please email your resume, including your college any any graduate school GPA's, to Lyon Law. Thank you again for your interest.
