Position Summary:


 

Reviews clinical information from a variety of medical records and assigns appropriate ICD-9-CM and/or CPT codes to patient records.  Accountable for the review of medical records (both paper and electronic) using CMS's HCC (methodology to ensure that records are being appropriately coded.  Additionally, this position will be required to produce reports, assist with quality assurance efforts and provide educational training to providers and staff.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

 


  • Reviews member charts at provider office locations with the purpose of identifying ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes and entering into the database.

  • Verifies and ensures the accuracy, completeness, specificity and appropriateness of diagnosis codes based on documentation reviewed.

  • Reviews medical records information and educates providers to ensure the documentation and coding is compliant with standards set by CMS's HCC methodologies and the ICD-9-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.

  • Performs the minimum number of audits consistent with established departmental goals.

  • Performs Quality Improvement (QI) and Education Reviews utilizing audit tools in the DataRAP application as identified by the manager and QI department.

  • Supplies provider and staff educational tools which may include presentations as assigned by Supervisor / Manager.

  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

 

 


Requirements:

 


  • Registered Nurse with current licensure to practice in the applicable state.

  • 1 or more years of clinical coding experience with strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy required.

  • CPC certification or proof that certification has been obtained within 9 months from the American Academy of Professional Coders required. 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications to include Word, Excel and Outlook required.

  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule and travel to markets requiring overnight stays. 

  • Ability and willingness to travel (locally and non-locally) as determined by business need.

 

Assets:


  •  

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

  • Auditing

  • Provider education ( highly preferred)

  • 10 years of clinical experience highly preferred
