Description

Transportation Manager
Columbus, OH.

Purpose

- Responsible for the SPLASH Transport (In-House Fleet) budget for Ohio Valley/Mid-South Region
- Administer the direction and control of all personnel, assets, and customers assigned to the Transport ops
- Ensure that the customer interface is managed in the most effective manner
- Manage external common carriers’ performance and cost
- Manage the planning and scheduling of company transport vehicles in within region to maximize revenue producing opportunities and minimize non-productive down time and excessive overtime

- The individual will be responsible for the Transport Operations (In-House Fleet) located in Columbus and Louisville and will manage a territory that consists of all shipments encompassing the states of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Western Pennsylvania, Tennessee
- The individual will be responsible to manage the Transport Operations operating budget and be responsible to identify and manage backhaul revenue
- The individual will manage a staff of 51, inclusive of 44 company drivers, as well as 36 tractors and 160 trailers
- The individual will be responsible to control assets in excess of $9.5 million
- 10% or less of travel

Essential Functions of job

40%: Operational and P&L Responsibility for the Transport Group in Irving

• Manage the Transport Operation Group’s financial performance to meet or exceed developed budget
• Identify and manage backhaul operations to meet/exceed budgetary revenue targets
• Administer the direction and control of assets under control
• Responsible to manage the BG Transportation budget for assigned region

20%: Manage interactions and relationships with customers and stakeholders
including Manufacturing Operations, Sales, PBS, Distribution, and ABC
Suppliers

• Ensure Transport Operations perform services consistent with consignee needs
• Develop close partnership with Production and Planning Teams in order to effectively respond and support manufacturing needs
• Collaborate with Ryder Team in order to maximize common carrier performance and minimize transportation cost
• Alignment and communication with Inventory Planning to order to support the replenishment needs of the internal branches
• Identify inbound opportunities with PBS and Plant Supply Chain Team
• Negotiate competitive backhaul rates with PBS and vendors
• In conjunction with Fleet, ensure maintenance and fuel costs are below market costs
• Manage driver performance and take proper disciplinary steps as necessary
• Manage and retain a designated fleet of drivers

15%: Continuous Improvement in both Cost and Service for the Transport Group
In Columbus

• Develop tools to accurately track the operating efficiencies of individual drivers. Identify drivers operating below goal and develop plans for improvement.

15%: Transport Fleet Safety, Training, and DOT Compliance

• Coordinate and participate in the presentation of training programs on the safe operation of Company Transport vehicles
• Assist in the establishment and promotion of safety and health programs to reduce industrial accidents and health hazards
• Ensure Transport Operation complies with all applicable DOT requirements

10%: Develop and Maintain Cost and Service Metrics for the Transport Group
Operations in Irving

• Develop a balanced scorecard for the Transport Operations performance. Metrics to include: Revenue per Truck vs. Cost per truck, Empty miles vs. Productive miles, Asset utilization, cost optimization of all shipping lanes, driver efficiency, Backhaul efficiency/Yield, Common Cost per lane, On Time Service (common carrier & fleet).

Qualifications

Experience: 2 + years people management and people development
5 + years’ experience in transportation and distribution

Educational Requirements
