Requirements

GENERAL PURPOSE
Applies preparatory materials, paints, and stains to surfaces of walls, ceilings, equipment, and furniture. Prepares and applies appropriate materials to signage and irregular surfaces such as parking lots, and exterior areas.. Working conditions include restricted movement; air contamination, dirty environment, lifting or carrying heavy objects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Applies protective and decorative coats of paint, varnish, lacquer, and/or other related materials to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, furniture, equipment, and other structures.
  • Washes, scrapes, sands, torches, and/or smoothes interior and exterior surfaces prior to painting, varnishing, lacquering or applying other related materials.
  • Cleans equipment, paint mixing area, and work area.
  • Operates compressors, striping machines, sandblasters, spray equipment, and other small power equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains drywall, wall texturing, and ceiling acoustic texturing.
  • Operates heavy lift equipment including scissors, and boom swing stage to heights of 80 feet.
  • Erects various types of scaffolding, staging, ladders, and planks to reach surfaces of work area for Painters and others.
  • Applies paints, stains, surface preparatory materials, and undercoating materials to a variety of surfaces, as appropriate, and according to Materials Safety Data Sheets ensuring compliance with hazardous materials guidelines.
  • Determines appropriate color for new or replacement applications through consultation with customer.
  • Maintains existing paint surfaces through matching and tinting of appropriate paint products.
  • Prepares and implements line striping layouts for streets, parking lots, and athletic fields according to Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), and various athletics requirements.
  • Identification, safe handling, and appropriate disposal of paints, stains, preparatory and undercoating materials, and other hazardous materials.
  • Creation and application of graphics and signage layouts according to ADOT, Safety, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements to meet state and federal regulations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, and application techniques common to the painting trade.
  • Knowledge and skill in hazardous materials handling, application, and disposal.
  • Knowledge of text and display requirements for signage applications.
  • Skill in the preparation and application of paints, stains, and surface preparation materials to a wide variety of surfaces.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Three years of painting experience.
  • Completes assigned work orders for general repair within assigned time frame in order to achieve the utmost operational efficiency of the hotel and its equipment.
  • Performs systematic checks and inspections to aid in the upkeep of the hotel and assists in the established proactive maintenance program in order to prevent malfunctions, breakdowns and general depreciation.
  • Immediately and courteously responds to guests needs in order to repair and/or resolve room maintenance requests and problems as they arise.
  • Maintains tools, work spaces and equipment in safe, secure and good condition in order to reduce accidents and to prolong their use.
  • Assists department in maintaining safety equipment and emergency procedures for the safety of all guests and employees.
  • Maintains a friendly, cheerful and courteous manner at all times.
  • All other duties as assigned, requested or deemed necessary by management.

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contacts, by telephone or written correspondence, electrical, plumbing and elevator contractors for repair/maintenance of hotel and its equipment.
  • Provides assistance to other employees and departments to contribute to the best overall performance of the department and hotel.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge:

  • Must have basic working knowledge in the following areas:
  • Painting - prep to finish, basic carpentry, tape/float, wall paper application and removal,

Skills:

  • Must have vision to read written directions, instructions, labels, etc..
  • Must have finger, hand and upper body dexterity to pull levers and rotate knobs, work with arms raised above head and to handle and assemble small parts using basic hand and power tools.
  • Must have upper body strength to lift 75lbs. throughout an 8 hour shift.
  • Must have leg strength and ability to crawl into and through small spaces, climb ladders, support and carry loads of 75lbs.

Abilities:

  • Must be able to understand and follow verbal/written instructions, communicate both verbally and in writing, utilize analytical thought processes, understand verbal/written technical and mechanical instruction, and be highly organized.
  • Must have ability to communicate effectively and courteously with employees, guests and contractors in writing, via telephone and in person.

Education/Formal Training : None

Experience: A minimum of 6 months successful experience in equal or similar position.

Material/Equipment Used: Painting equipment, such as paint spray guns, brushes, scrapers, seal coating pumps and sprayers, ladders, etc.
Possible potential exposure to hazardous materials on a daily basis.

Environment: Outdoor exposure to both stable and extreme hot temperatures during summer months.
Prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and heavy lifting.
