As a Program Director in the Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO), you will be engaged in leading a broad range of Information System projects within the Healthcare domain.  These exciting Projects will encompass a broad range of corporate services systems with enterprise programs that may run across multiple business lines and the full array of UnitedHealth Group (UHG) systems.  Budget accountability may span $20M – 50M per year with Programs that deliver over 1-3 years. 

 

This position may be located on our Hartford, CT or Minnetonka, MN offices.

 

The Program Director will be responsible for:


  • Execution and delivery of assigned programs and projects within scope, budgetary, schedule, benefit, and quality commitments

  • Coordinating with other teams and application areas as necessary to resolve schedule, issues, risks and other interdependency challenges

  • Providing high level subject matter expertise in areas including program management, project management, project scope definition, risk identification, project methodology, resource allocation, facilitation, and other project management areas

  • Driving risk/issue resolution, and appropriate escalations

  • Understanding the 'bigger picture' of the program and business impacts to initiatives

 

The Program Director will be highly involved in the definition, management, and implementation of significant technology focused projects working directly with UHG functional business clients including:


  • Aligning technology solutions with business strategies through the delivery of a portfolio of projects

  • Proactively identifying opportunities, conduct analyses, needs assessments, cost/benefit assessments and broker other IS services

  • Industry thought leadership

  • Developing solutions that transform the industry

  • Leading large, complex projects to achieve key business objectives

  • Directing a team of 3 -10 PM's and mentoring their development

  • Predicting emerging customer needs and develops innovative solutions to meet them

  • Participating in the development of business strategy

  • Developing and managing business plans to achieve objectives

  • Solving unique and complex problems with broad impact on the business

  • Translating highly complex concepts in ways that can be understood by a variety of audiences

  • Influencing senior leadership to adopt new ideas, products, and/or approaches

  • Overseeing large teams of matrixed IT PM resources along with business PMs and cross functional resources

 

Competencies:


  • In-depth Healthcare industry knowledge will be an important part of being successful in this role

  • Ensure adherence to established risk management approaches to identify, analyze and mitigate project risks/issues

  • Establish/apply quality objectives, criteria, standards and levels, with input from applicable stakeholders (e.g., key performance indicators)

  • Analyze project outcomes and make appropriate recommendations to improve project quality going forward (e.g., stakeholder

  • satisfaction, lessons learned)

  • Ability to build and manage relationships across a large enterprise

  • Ability to influence decisions from top down and bottom up

  • Solid analytical, problem-solving and financial analysis skills

Requirements


  • 15 or more years of Project and Program Management experience in a large enterprise environment (Fortune 200 companies preferred)

  • 10 or more years management of large programs and project/program managers

  • 15 or more years technical experience in one or more aspects of Information Systems Development or Business / Information Systems areas

  • 5 or more years of budget accountability, tracking and complex cost benefit analysis ($20M plus)

  • Experience establishing and heading up a Program Management Office

  • Professional PM methodology trained

  • Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) project management

  • Very strong understanding of distributed technologies & architecture

  • Solid understanding of mainframe technologies

  • C-level interface and presentation skills

  • Proficiency in computer software such as Project, Power Point, and Excel

  • Bachelor's Degree
