The Time Warner Cable Charlotte location currently seeks Systems Engineer for our Applications Center of Excellence Department. Below please find a brief description of the essential duties and responsibilities required to function successfully in this position.

Position Summary
The Principal Systems Engineer is a senior technical leader responsible for developing requirements, designs, and setting of planning priorities as well as support for trouble resolution, operations and maintenance of systems, applications and equipment used in the delivery of Digital Interactive Services to Time Warner Cable customers. This includes all provisioning servers, video-on-demand server and storage arrays, reporting databases, entertainment and information applications, back-office integration systems, and monitoring and management tools. The Principal Systems Engineer is additionally responsible for the operating system performance, database performance and optimization, automation through scripting as well as monitoring through scripting. The Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for reliable, consistent operation of these systems to provide a quality entertainment and information experience for our customers. .

Essential Job Functions:

- Provides senior level engineering support for the planning, design, priority setting, configuration and documentation of all networks and systems.

- Leads evaluation of new technologies, researches new products and documents the necessary product specifications.

- Analyzes forecast numbers and models to adequately forecast traffic requirements and capital costs.Participates in annual capital budget preparation and decisions impacting allocation of funds.

- Develops requirements, functional specifications, and project plans for complex company-wide high impact initiatives.

- Provides updates and reports to other departments and Senior Management to ensure clear understanding of issues.

- Provides full system life cycle support to various projects in order to ensure data integrity and consistency.

- Serve as expert for assigned applications. Configure, program, document, install and maintain UNIX operating systems (Linux, Solaris).

- Authorize system upgrades based on evaluation and testing and release cycle following the approved Time Warner Cable Change Management Process.

- Provide systems and applications support which includes MAS, mADM, AMS and MBMS and engineering for the Sun Solaris platform and Linux based platforms. This role is a combination of advanced systems administration and systems engineering.

- Understanding of shell programming (Borne shell, C shell, and/or Korne shell), knowledge of PERL and C programming; must be able to configure, program, install and administer a variety of UNIX services and server applications.

- Create, write and maintain scripts and programs to perform critical system administration tasks such as system error reporting, backups, utilization rates, and capacity, security checks, etc.

- Manage performance, reliability and security on UNIX systems.

- Specific applications and devices supported and maintained include:
o Scientific Atlanta DNCS, Application Server, TED Server, XOD Server/MAS, BIG/TSB, set top box, CableCARD devices.
o Tandberg/Mystro BMS, Tandberg AMS, Tandberg MediaPath Catcher, Storage Array and all associated devices and components
o VOD & XOD content servers and monitoring servers.

- Performs software upgrades including troubleshooting and repair to applications running on the above devices in a manner consistent with Time Warner Cable ' s change-management procedures.

- Maintain video source mapping, content encryption, and channel lineups for digital services.

- Maintains Video on Demand and Pay Per View offers, including special event and special interest programming packages.

- Interface with various departments with various technical levels to lead service activation and troubleshoot product performance issues, including Billing/IT, Marketing, Corporate, Customer Service, Technical Operations, Engineering/Maintenance, equipment vendors and contractors.

- Author, maintain and analyze reports for storage capacity, system capacity and reliability.

- Updates and maintains manual and computerized logs and records in accordance with Federal, NY State, and Local Government and Time Warner Cable Engineering requirements.

- May assist in on the job training of lower grade personnel


Job Requirements:

- Expert knowledge of various networking protocols such as TCP/IP, SNMP, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, SSH, Telnet and extensive knowledge of and experience with UNIX operating systems, utilities, tools and applications is required.

- Experience operating a Scientific Atlanta DNCS system and Video on Demand systems in an ISA environment is desirable.

- Experience maintaining Linux, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft Windows servers and networks, including expert knowledge of UNIX operating systems and solid troubleshooting skills.

- Knowledge of database implementation, administration and maintenance is desirable.

- Experience in all Microsoft Office Software products, with excellent word processing, spreadsheets and database skills.

- Must possess extreme attention to detail, be an independent, self-motivated worker and have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining excellent performance and results.

- Excellent communication skills. Knowledgeable of leadership principles and practices.

- Anticipates problems and creates or devises plans to rectify situations while displaying good judgment.

- Must be highly flexible to change work schedules and locations on short notice, including overnight work in and around the region.

- This position impacts Customer Service/Call Center, Marketing, Telecommunications, IS and ultimately the customer.

Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of the concepts and integration of Video on Demand (VOD) systems into the network
Understanding of system controllers (DNCS & DACs)

Education and Experience:
Bachelor ' s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or equivalent training, education and experience.
