Job Summary
Deliver the services of Visiting Angels to care recipients over the age of 17. Provide routine personal hygiene care, companionship and comfort to care recipients. Perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Incidental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). Communicate with care recipients’ families or facilities to ensure good continuity of care. Report to Care Supervisors for administrative support and to the Nurse Manager for technical/medical support.

Essential functions

  • Follow the individual Care Plan sanctioned by the Nurse Manager. Provide continuous companionship and personal care.
  • Provide assistance to care recipient inside the place of residence:
  • In and out of bed.
  • Meal planning, food purchasing and food preparation.
  • Feeding.
  • Walking including using a walker or wheelchair.
  • Self-administration of medications as instructed by health caregivers.
  • Perform light housekeeping and laundry.
  • Personal hygiene including shower, tub or bed bath.
  • Mouth, skin and hair care.
  • Toileting.
  • Measure and record fluid intake and output.
  • Take and record blood pressure.
    • 3.    Provide assistance to care recipient outside of the place of residence:
    • Driving to appointments within the local area.
    • Assisting in and out of vehicle.
    • Running errands within the local area with the care recipient.
      • Communication and training – Document all services provided and complete care logs for each shift. Communicate all changes in care recipient’s physical or mental condition to Nurse Manager or Care Supervisor including suspicions of exploitation, abuse or neglect. Earn 12 in-service hours per calendar year. Attend mandatory staff meeting every quarter.

DECISION MAKING
Perform a limited number of routine tasks prescribed by the Care Plan. Rely on practical experience to accomplish them. Inform supervisor when care recipient becomes resistant or belligerent.

KNOWLEDGE
Working knowledge of:

  • Elder care practice and procedures.
  • How to handle care recipients with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
  • E-mail and cell phones.
  • Regulations issued by Virginia Department of Health / Office of Licensure and Certification.
  • Visiting Angels’ corporate policies.
  • Agency’s policies, procedures and operating guidelines.
  • Stay current in the knowledge of their profession through continuing education.

ABILITIES

  • Speaks, reads and writes English fluently.
  • Works independently in various care locations (private residence, nursing home, long-term care facilities) across the service area for Visiting Angels (e.g. the Virginia Peninsula up to and including James City County/Williamsburg and Isle of Whight/Smithfield).
  • Establishes and maintains caring relationships with care recipients and their families even in difficult circumstances.
  • Establishes professional relationships with staff in medical and nursing facilities when applicable.
  • Maintains good communication with Care Supervisors through the regular use of a personal cell phone and email account.
  • Is considerate of care recipients and hold their personal information as confidential.
  • Follows HIPAA and OSHA regulations as prescribed by Visiting Angels.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with tact and diplomacy.
  • Keeps care recipients active and engaged in daily activities of living.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed in a variety of indoor locations (private residence, nursing home, long-term care facilities) and in public areas (shops, professional offices). It requires repeated standing, bending, stooping, pulling, pushing and lifting of weights up to 25lbs. None of the essential functions of the position can be performed virtually away from the usual work locations.

QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a proof of formal DMAS training as a Personal Care Aide and at least 2 years of experience in the field of elder care or in care giving.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and proof of current PPD vaccination.

FLSA status: This is a non-exempt position.
