Legal advisor for credit card Collections, Recovery, Operations business units

Qualifications

This role provides legal advisory support for Discover Card’s Collections, Recovery, & Operations business units. Discover Card currently has over 50 million cardholders and is a recognized leader in brand loyalty and cash reward programs. The Card Collections, Recovery, and Operations lawyers provide legal advice to the Card recovery and collections teams, as well as bankruptcy/probate, credit bureau reporting, and customer service call centers. These lawyers review all policies and procedures related to Card Collections, Recovery, and Operations business units, customer service scripts, and call strategies, and provide training and manage the legal aspects of credit bureau relationships. The ideal candidate will have in-depth experience in debt collections and one or more other relevant areas and familiarity with consumer credit laws generally.

Regulatory Advisory Support
Discover is a regulated bank holding company and its credit card operations are subject to oversight by the Federal Reserve, the FDIC, and the CFPB. This role will provide regulatory advice and support to the Discover Card Collections, Recovery, & Operations business units generally and during regulatory exams. Interfacing with regulators and assisting business clients in preparing accurate, complete, and timely exam responses are critically important to ensuring a successful regulatory exam. If an exam results in corrective actions, this role will work with the business units to develop and implement timely corrective actions. Proactively identifying new legal/regulatory requirements and regulatory expectations, and communicating new requirements and expectations to business clients, is expected in this role.

- Ability to identify and implement best practices in legal advisory work.
- Ability to develop creative solutions to legal/regulatory issues, assess relative risk of various solutions, and deal with ambiguity.
- Team player with commitment to work collaboratively with others in the Law Department and across the company.
- Strong oral and written analytic and communication skills.

Key Knowledge/Experience
- JD from ABA accredited law school and admission to Bar.
- Expertise as consumer credit advisory lawyer or financial services equivalent, minimum 4 - 6 years.
- Solid knowledge of federal and state consumer credit laws and regulations, including: TILA, TCPA, FDCPA, FCRA.
- Experience with Fed, FDIC, CFPB regulatory examinations and expectations desired.
- Demonstrated experience in enhancing the overall legal/regulatory compliance environment.
