The overall goal of the Peer Support program is to help promote recovery within an acute-care-psychiatric setting by engaging with clients and in assisting in the establishment of secure community connections of all kinds. The Peer Support Counselor will work alongside individuals during and after a psychiatric hospitalization to encourage wellness and independence.

The Peer Support Counselor helps to foster hope and serves as a role model for persons who are transitioning back into the community. Common activities of the Peer Support Counselor include assistance in increasing natural support networks; effective utilization of community resources; support in acquiring and keeping a job; involvement in meaningful community activities; support and encouragement for increased self-advocacy; and other individually identified activities that enhance self-esteem, hope, and empowerment.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Offer a positive example of a person with "lived" experience, who has been successful at managing his or her own recovery from Mental Health and/or Substance Use disorders.

  • Offer a positive, supportive relationship that helps promote hope, choice, wellness and recovery for participants.

  • Provide assistance in identifying and linking to community-based services and support (Primary Care, Mental Health and/or Substance Abuse treatment, housing, Financial benefits, etc.) Peer support services will be offered in the peer's home, and in the community.

  • Provide information and support related to the experience of being hospitalized.

  • Provide one-to-one and/or group support during hospitalization. Continue to provide short-term-support services following Hospital discharge.

  • Assistance with developing Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP).

  • Assistance with transportation to appointments, etc., via private vehicle.

  • Help with identifying and/or re-engaging with family, friends, and other natural support.

  • Provide education and resources that support Illness self-management, self-determination, self-advocacy, and shared healthcare decision making.

  • This position requires that the selected candidate be able to work a flexible schedule.

  • Other duties, as assigned.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma/GED.

  • Must be able to travel 75% of the time in the Salt Lake County area.

  • Certified Peer Specialist OR the ability to complete Training program within one year of employment.

  • Understanding of the principles of Recovery and Resiliency.

  • Successful completion of OR the ability to complete ‘Seeking Safety' Training Program.

  • Self-disclosure as a current or former consumer of OR as a family member of a consumer of Mental Health or Substance Abuse services.

  • Current, non-restrictive Utah Driver's License.

  • Reliable vehicle for use in transporting clients and verification of Insurance.
Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience in Consumer-run Support Groups.

  • Certified Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) facilitator.

  • Working knowledge of Salt Lake County resources.
