About this job

The Produce Clerk is responsible for the proper stocking and rotation of merchandise in the Produce Department, including trimming, watering, and merchandising of products to ensure fresh, high quality offerings. This position ensures proper inventory control to maximize product freshness and availability, and answers questions from customers in a friendly and helpful manner.

Essential Functions

  • Responds positively to customer’s inquiries and assists customers with questions, information and product selection
  • Ensures cleanliness of Produce department, storage area, and work area for safety; includes cleaning of                 shelves and products, keeping floors free of spills or water, removing hazardous debris from floor and sweeping
  • Stocks Produce department; includes presentation of product, facing, filling, and organization of all product items as set by the Produce Department schematics as well as ensuring tag and pricing accuracy
  • Examines the rotation of all Produce products paying particular attention to expired stock and properly discarding            outdated or spoiled items pursuant to Sprouts standards
  • Receives, inspects, and logs products for accuracy of shipment, temperature, and quality
  • Requires operating and using equipment such as knives, scales, wrappers, compactors, garbage disposals, pallet jacks, and hand trucks
  • Ensures all wet racks are stocked, clean, and maintain proper temperatures
  • Cleans and sanitizes work area (including tables, floor, scales, cases, cooler, etc.)
  • Participates in pre-inventory preparation; includes back stock and assuring tags match products.
  • Sustains a high level of product knowledge and product preparation
  • Walks department regularly to ensure an organized, sanitary, and overall clean appearance at all times
  • Follows all safety practices and procedures

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous Produce experience in a natural foods industry helpful, but not required
  • Basic knowledge of math, weights, and measures
  • Must gain an understanding of proper handling, preparation, seasonality, and appropriate shelf life of products
  • Strong people skills with the ability to work effectively independently and as part of the team
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Food handlers permit
  • Ability to work varied hours/days as business dictates 

Physical Requirements

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by a team member to successfully perform the essential functions of this position or that a team member encounters while performing the essential functions of this position.   • Requires standing, walking, bending, climbing throughout the entire work day and the ability to lift, stack and maneuver heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs., from 4” to 72”, for a distance up 3 feet for between 10-50 hours without mechanical assistance
  • Must be able to use a pallet jack to move pallets a distance up to 20 feet, requiring a force of up to 85 pounds for up to 5 hours
  • Must maneuver six wheel carts requiring a force up to 35 lbs., up to 2 hours, a distance up to 20 feet
  • Must move utility cart with a force up to 30 lbs., for a distance up to 50 feet and for up to 50 hours
  • Must be capable of climbing a 2 step stool to retrieve product throughout the shift.
  • Must be able to climb a 2 step stool
  • Requires standing up to 4 hours continuously, and a total of 8 hours per shift
  • Requires acute vision for cutting, trimming, washing, and banding produce
  • Must be able to work in freezer
  • Walking a total up to 5 miles in an 8 hour shift should be expected
  • Weekend, evening and holiday work will be required in the position; flexible store assignments
  • Minimum age for employment is 18
