The Huntsville facility has been in operation since 1969, and PPG Industries, Inc. is the world's leading supplier of transparencies for business aviation, commercial and military aircraft. In addition, PPG Aerospace produces a line of specialty transparencies using related technologies including an aircraft “Repair Business” which refurbishes damaged windshields to like new condition and automotive ballistics. Manufacturing is a complex working environment in which simultaneous production is in progress on hundreds of product designs using a wide variety of complex technologies. Products are produced in relatively low volume and have very high unit value. New product introductions occur continuously.

The Department Manager is responsible for ensuring the safe, cost effective and timely manufacture of Transparencies products which requires the full integration and coordination of production processes. The incumbent is accountable for integrating operations with other functional areas within the plant to ensure production schedules are accomplished. The incumbent is also responsible for setting department budgets and for ensuring product is manufactured in accordance with EH&S and quality standards. The incumbent directly impacts production continuity and balance, production schedules, material requisition, machine loading, equipment maintenance, and employee relations. The incumbent is accountable for ensuring the department complies with applicable governmental regulations, PPG policies and procedures to ensure the safe and environmentally secure operation of the plant. The incumbent selects, trains and motivates department personnel to optimize productivity and manage costs. The incumbent is also responsible for continuous improvement of the operations, cost saving initiatives and transformation to a Lean Manufacturing environment. The incumbent is responsible for supporting the plant union-free strategy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Plan, direct and coordinate all production activities within the specific department.
· Follow all industry standards for safety, health and environmental initiatives.
· Drive safety performance improvement.
· Plan and develop operating budgets and manage to those budgets.
· Monitor production schedules and ensure department meets those schedules.
· Plan and develop cost savings projects.
· Drive the department to a Lean Manufacturing state.
· Support planning and implementation of continuous improvement projects, plant improvements and expansions to maximize productivity, yields and reduce leadtimes.
· Perform longer term capacity analysis of the department to plan and implement actions necessary to meet those future demand requirements.
· Communicate business information to hourly associates to keep them informed of business needs and status.
· Communicate on a regular basis with other departments to ensure smooth product flow and consistency throughout the plant.
· Plan & coordinate preventative maintenance downtime in conjunction with the maintenance department to meet production requirements to maximize equipment availability.
· Develop manufacturing capabilities to meet future manufacturing needs.
· Track, analyze and improve key production metrics required to meet the business goals
· Work with the Human Resources department to obtain necessary resources to meet the business needs.
· Ensure the plant policies are fairly administered throughout the department.
· Maintain a positive employee relations environment throughout the plant.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in engineering or other technical discipline. At least five to eight years production experience is required. Excellent interpersonal, written/verbal communication and leadership skills are required. Managerial experience is preferred.
