POSITION SUMMARY
This is a non-supervisory, entry-level meat cutting trainee position. The Meat Cutter Trainee learns the skills of handling and cutting fresh meat and other meat products, safe, sanitary and efficient operation of the meat department, ordering and inventory, equipment operations, and merchandising according standards set by the company. The Meat Cutter Trainee delivers the highest level of customer service and satisfaction, by learning to trim and prepare standard cuts of meat. The Meat Cutter Trainee merchandises and presents fresh meat to maximize sales. The Meat Cutter trainee demonstrates excellent teamwork, interpersonal skills, and commitment to the success of the team.

KEY FUNCTIONS
  • Successful completion of Save-A-Lot Meat Cutter Training Program within 3 months. Training includes learning to use knives and power equipment, cutting and/or packaging authorized beef, pork and poultry items according to Save-A-Lot policies and procedures.
  • Wraps, weighs and prices cuts of meat.
  • Labels packages according to COOL, USDA and Save-A-Lot standards.
  • Ensures that displays and case signs are updated appropriately and that meat is merchandised and presented to maximize sales. May assist with product ordering.
  • Maintains proper date rotation for dated and undated products per Save-A-Lot policy, both in the display case and in the storage cooler.
  • Prepares and places meat cuts and products in display counter according to company policy & procedures so they will appear attractive and appealing to the customers
  • Receives, inspects, and stores meat upon delivery, to maintain cold chain and ensure meat quality.
  • Completes cleaning and sanitation of meat cases and meat rooms, ensuring SAL sanitation and quality standards are mantained.
  • Protect company property, funds and merchandise at all times. Responsibilities may include other perishable and non-perishable related duties necessary to maintain optimal store performance.


JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Company work history will be strongly considered, including attendance, work performance, safety, policy compliance and counselings.
  • Proficiency in basic math skills required, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Successful completion of Save-A-Lot Meat Cutter Training Program within 3 months.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak in English. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication, interpersonal skills. Language proficiency in Spanish or other languages are a plus in certain locations.
  • Must be dependable and flexible, including a willingness to work in other areas of the store, as needed with little or no advance notice. Some travel may be required.
  • Excellent customer service, teamwork and problem solving skills.
  • Experience in grocery perishable department, knife cutting, or meat wrapping preferred.
  • Experience safely using manual pallet jacks, hand tools and power equipment, including but not limited to, knives, wrappers, scales, slicers, cubing machine, and power saw (where certified to cut meat) preferred.


PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
  • Most work is performed in a temperature controlled environment with a standard temperature of 38-45 degrees.
  • Requires the ability to reach, bend, twist, balance, lift and transport various objects weighing up to 30 pounds repeatedly throughout the shift; at times, product weight may reach 100 lbs. Requires the ability to move heavy product with assistance.
  • Must have the ability to stand, walk and / or move about for extended periods of time.
  • Requires the ability to push, pull, grasp and use sawing motions for extended periods of time.
