The RAND Corporation is a non-profit research organization that helps improve policy and decision-making through research and analysis (http://www.rand.org/about/history.html). The RAND Survey Research Group (SRG) is seeking part-time Bilingual (English/Spanish) Field Interviewers to work an average of 18-24 hours per week on the CalSES project, a longitudinal survey of California families. This is a temporary, part time, adjunct position based in Stanislaus, Ca. The expected duration of the first year of the project is March-July 2015. Pay rate is $16.00 per hour including travel time. Work related mileage will be reimbursed at a rate of $.0575/mile.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This California Socioeconomic Survey is a longitudinal survey of California families enrolled in the CalWORKs Program (a state-funded program operated locally by county welfare departments that provides cash assistance and other services to eligible needy California families in all 58 counties in California). The survey is being conducted as part of a larger research project being conducted by the RAND Corporation and the American Institutes for Research (AIR) that seeks to assess the impact of recent changes to the CalWORKs Program on California families. The results of the survey will provide information that may help improve the services provided by CalWORKs.

FIELD INTERVIEWER POSITION:

Field interviewers will conduct in-home assessments of children ages 2-12 enrolled in the CalWORKs program. The assessments involve assessing children's literacy and numeracy skills, measuring height and weight, and assisting older children and parents in completing a brief paper/pencil survey. In addition, field interviewers will help track respondents to obtain current contact information and invite them to participate in a telephone interview. A desirable candidate will possess the following qualities:
  • Motivated self-starter comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Comfortable travelling to and working with at-risk and under-served populations in a range of community and neighborhood settings (mileage will be reimbursed)
  • Comfortable working with children
  • Exceptional time-management, organizational, and record keeping skills
  • Prior interviewing, coursework, or related professional experience preferred
  • Access to a computer with Internet access at home
  • Good basic computer skills
  • Valid driver's license, proof of auto insurance, and dependable car
  • Flexible work schedule, including ability to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends
  • Ability to pass a DMV check
  • Ability to pass a Megan's Law and a background check
  • Bilingual English/Spanish language skills required (reading and speaking)


TRAINING

Field interviewers must successfully complete a 7-day paid training that will be held from March 9-17 at RAND's Santa Monica offices. Full attendance at training is mandatory.

Eligibility for employment is contingent upon successful completion of training, verified reference checks, a bilingual English/Spanish evaluation, a DMV background check, signing a confidentiality agreement, and a criminal background check including Megan's law.
