Job Summary

The Attorney evaluates and helps to mitigate risk for the organization in a limited, discrete area or function. He/She ensures consistency in the legal and business positions taken by UPS and supports the fact finding and evaluation of legal matters. This position reviews applicable laws, policies, and regulations to determine positions that best protect the company and communicates with business units to support legal compliance and consistency. The Attorney manage outside counsel (OC) in representing UPS. He/She may manage Legal Administration Managers, Legal Administration Managers, Paralegals, and Administrative Assistants.

The Attorney assists negotiation of resolutions to establish solutions for involved parties and to protect UPS. He/She documents legal resolutions to provide written records for involved parties. This Collaborates with OC to identify and correct areas of non-compliance and legal risk for the company.  The Attorney Coordinates with OC in the representation of the company’s position to ensure a consistent, accurate, and complete explanation and defense of UPS’s legal position. He/She Reviews laws, policies, and regulations applicable to legal situations to frame possible outcomes and to determine a position for UPS that best serves and protects the company. This position evaluates factual circumstances surrounding legal matters (e.g., course of events, causes of violations, agreements, etc.) to gain a better understanding and to ensure the accuracy of facts. The Attorney reviews and provides advice from a legal perspective on communications (e.g., customer communications, employee communications, etc.) to reduce and eliminate legal risk in communications. 

Other Duties

  • Reviews pertinent documentation to determine the rights and obligations of involved parties (e.g., UPS, UPS employees, government agencies, plaintiffs, defendants, etc.).
  • Reviews laws, policies, and regulations applicable to legal situations to frame possible outcomes and to determine a position for UPS that best serves and protects the company.
  • Documents legal resolutions to provide written records for involved parties.
  • Assigns Attorneys from OC to ensure expertise is appropriately matched with specific legal matters.
  • Manages OC to keep them on plan and on budget.
  • Resolves individual and group performance issues in accordance with UPS’s policies and procedures in a timely manner to motivate and foster teamwork.
  • Ensures that direct and indirect reports have specific, documented career goals and detailed plans for achieving these goals to advance the development of their personal and professional growth.
  • Identifies individual and team skill gaps and developmental opportunities (e.g., training, special assignments, projects, etc.) to facilitate individual and team development.
  • Responds to day-to-day questions from business units to provide advice in discrete areas and to support compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Provides guidance to business unit management to assist the business in resolving disputes and to ensure consistent, appropriate, and cost-effective handling of legal matters.

  • Negotiation:  Uses multiple strategies to persuade others; identifies and removes barriers to agreements; wins concessions effectively; provides input into future negotiation processes or strategies.
  • Risk Management: Prioritizes complex, material, and/or multi-functional risks to the enterprise; coordinates and provides governance over risk treatments; develops business continuity plans to improve preparedness and response capabilities.
  • Vendor/Supplier Management: Maintains strategic relationships with vendor leadership; reviews and selects vendors for contracts; creates vendor contracts; identifies and resolves vendor or contract issues; recommends changes to the procurement process.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Regulatory experience - Preferred
  • Franchising experience - Preferred
  • Experience in drafting complex agreements (e.g. intellectual property agreements and vendor agreements) - Preferred
