The Senior Healthcare Economics Consultant will support UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement's Affordability agenda. This position will partner with the Associate Director and other team members to extract, analyze, and interpret healthcare data to uncover trends and assist with the achievement of the company's affordability target. A successful Senior Consultant will help lead others on the HCE team and will collaborate extensively with our business partners on a daily basis. They must comfortably work independently and as part of a team. Effective communication to customers is integral as the senior consultant should understand the essence of multiple projects and be able to clearly articulate the business impact to those outside of our team.


 


The Senior Consultant will design and develop data queries through SAS and other tools as they create models to analyze business opportunities. They will also lead in the development of presentations to management and customers. This position will work with very large data sets and see projects from concept to completion as they contribute to database creation, statistical modeling, and financial report development. This individual will interpret and analyze claim data from various sources and provide project valuations and recommendations for the business.


 


This position will be responsible to research and interpret CMS guidelines that drive initiative opportunities. They will investigate key business problems through quantitative analyses of utilization and healthcare cost data. The senior consultant leads in the development and presentation of statistical findings/conclusions and is able to integrate other business initiative impacts. This position provides data in support of financial and utilization analyses, and identifies potential areas for medical cost improvements or alternate pricing strategies.


 


Primary Responsibilities:



  • Develop and improve quantitative data analytics and set performance targets

  • Lead projects to completion by contributing to database creation, statistical modeling and financial reports

  • Interpret and analyze clinical data from various sources and recommend best approaches

  • Provide claims, premium, capitation and membership data in support of Underwriting, Actuarial and utilization analyses

  • Create and update automated processes

  • Analyze reporting tools to investigate sources of variations

  • Produce and review reports

Requirements

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree or higher

  • 4+ years of work experience in a corporate setting

  • 5+ years of experience with data analysis and working with large data sets

  • Advanced MS Excel skills: data analysis & report creation

  • SAS/SQL Knowledge/Skills: ability to write concise code for projects with sometimes vague criteria

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills: ability to deliver a concise message

  • Comfortable in interactions with various levels of management

  • Ability to work successfully in an ever-changing, fast paced environment

  • Ability to develop a plan and to deliver on stated objectives

  • Strong eye for data integrity

  • Ability to problem solve and to be resourceful on complex projects

  • Capacity to review the work of others and to serve as a sounding board on other projects

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience in the Healthcare industry

  • Possess an MBA or relevant graduate degree

  • Possess the ability to consolidate data, tell the story, and make recommendations

  • Be comfortable with priority shifts and an environment of continued organizational change

  • Have a strong desire to learn continuously and to be a company thought leader

  • Participate in business strategy development

  • Be comfortable with less structure and be able to gather pertinent facts to present recommendations

  • Work well independently, but also serve as a resource to other team members

  • Maintain a strategic perspective and connect related dots across multiple initiatives

  • Listen to and anticipate customer needs in the delivery of innovative and intuitive solutions

  • Leverage existing and ad-hoc report capabilities to identify trends in health plan performance and opportunities for medical expense reduction

  • Possess supervisory experience

  • Have exposure to healthcare claims data and medical codes
