SUMMARY
Responsible for assisting the News Director in overall planning, development and production of all news programming, and providing day to day management of the newsroom.
Responsible for managing both editorial content and personnel, including scheduling and holding managers and staff accountable to one another and newsroom expectations up to and including disciplinary matters.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides leadership for the editorial direction of programming for TWC News Austin/San Antonio, including daily news coverage, long-range planning for major news events and production initiatives from Austin ' s news gathering production hub covering all of Central and South Central Texas
- Enforces strict journalistic, ethical and legal standards
- Assists in hiring, supervising and developing news staff
- Conducts performance evaluations for direct reports, including reporters and producers
- Works with technical departments to facilitate use of newsroom systems and to coordinate work flow between technical and news staffs
- Works with technical staff to coordinate remote productions
- Works with Creative Services Department to promote and market TWC News and coordinates special programming with the Traffic and Sales departments
- Approves time cards, vacation requests and expenses for News Dept. as needed
- Maintains a positive work environment by motivating and communicating in a professional manner
- Performs other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for providing direct and indirect supervision of staff of approximately 70 employees in Austin and San Antonio, Texas
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Solid leadership and the ability to make financial management decisions in determining news coverage
- Extensive knowledge of television news journalism, ethics and procedures
- Understanding of social media and best practices for integrating in newsroom
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to motivate and train individuals
- Ability to make quick decisions and meet very strict deadlines
- Adept at embracing new technology
- Multi-tasking skills a must
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- Four year college degree required; Journalism degree preferred
- At least 8 years newsroom experience required, including a minimum of 3 years in a managerial role
- Must be able to maintain business and personnel information in a confidential manner.
- Television news or video production background preferred.
