A glimpse at the job:
At Wegmans, we strive to help our customers live healthier, better lives and are able to do this by offering a variety of delicious fresh fruits and vegetables in our Produce department. As a Team Leader in this area, you'll oversee a unique category of fruits or vegetables, assist in running the department and will work with team members to develop their skills and passions, expanding and sharing your knowledge of a wide variety of products from around the world.

I will add value by:
  • Performing tasks essential to the proper functioning of the department including ordering with Simplification practices in mind, hiring & staffing, training & development, scheduling and managing payroll
  • Leading employees by example to provide incredible customer service by proactively approaching customers, educating them about unique produce offerings, making suggestions for meal solutions and helping locate products throughout the department
  • Delegating tasks to team members and empowering them to take on new challenges, being certain to provide timely feedback and annual performance reviews that focus on their growth and professional development
  • Maintaining the overall appearance of the department, merchandising cases and displays consistent with company standards to showcase quality, freshness and unique products offered; being sure to highlight Peak of Perfection and featured items to drive sales in the department
  • Using passion and knowledge of products to educate both team members and customers, ensuring they have the tools needed to make, or help make, great meals easy
  • Possessing a knowledge of product and industry trends, including organics and cooking techniques; understanding how seasonality and other variables influence availability and making adjustments to merchandising plans and ordering
  • Maintaining open lines of communication with vendors and local farmers; overseeing orders that are delivered, checking quality of products and taking appropriate steps when quality expectations are not met
  • Maintaining open lines of communication with team members and Produce Manager to ensure smooth department operations
  • Educating and ensuring team members are properly handling products, using equipment and keeping accurate logs in accordance with food safety and safety guidelines

  • Customer service experience, preferably in a food service, grocery or retail setting

  • Exhibit merchandising skills by attractively displaying products considering seasonality, cross-merchandising opportunities and corporate programs with the aim of educating and enticing customers
  • Assist with meal preparation and planning by providing customers with proper serving guidelines and recommending correct cooking techniques, helping to make great meals easy
  • Maintain a safety focus by ensuring safety standards are followed, teaching safety practices to employees, looking for ways to improve safety, solving safety problems, and looking for ways to exceed safety standards and reduce risk potential

Work environment:
  • Work involves continuous interaction with customers and co-workers in a fast-paced environment
  • Typical motions include repetitive hand and arm movements, bending and reaching
  • Responsible for moving and lifting an average of 5 – 20 pounds with a maximum weight lifted greater than 50 pounds occasionally
  • May be exposed to various allergens and work environments including cold temperatures and wet conditions
  • Work may require the safe and proper handling of knives and food processing equipment
  • Will be required to spend the majority of time on his or her feet and stand or walk without a break for up to 4 hours
