At Wegmans, we strive to meet customer needs for everything from a quick mid-week meal to a special holiday that requires extra planning. Our meat department is there to provide a main course no matter the occasion. In the role of a Meat Team Leader, you'll assist in running the Meat department and will work with team members to develop their skills and passions. I will add value by:

· Performing tasks essential to the proper functioning of the department including ordering with Simplification practices in mind, hiring & staffing, training & development, scheduling and managing payroll

· Leading employees by example to provide incredible customer service by proactively approaching customers; answering questions about products; cutting, weighing and packaging a variety of meat products for customers

· Delegating tasks to team members and empowering them to take on new challenges, being certain to provide timely feedback and annual performance reviews that focus on their growth and professional development

· Using passion and knowledge of products to educate both team members and customers, ensuring they have the tools needed to make, or help make, great meals easy

· Ensuring team members are trained on proper ways to cut and trim a variety of meat products to eliminate waste from improper cutting

· Possessing an understanding of the industry, recognizing how seasonal trends will influence sales and adjusting orders to ensure enough product is available to meet customer needs

· Working with Prepared Foods department and Meat Manager to come up with ways to utilize waste and reduce the amount of shrink in the department

· Maintaining the overall appearance of the department by ensuring products levels are sustained throughout the day; cases are well-merchandised consistent with company standards to showcase quality and drive sales in the department, monitoring appearance and quality throughout the day to ensure products meet Wegmans standards at all times; and rotating products for freshness

· Maintaining open lines of communication with team members and Meat Manager to ensure smooth department operations

· Educating and ensuring team members are properly handling products, using equipment and keeping accurate logs in accordance with food safety and safety guidelines

  • Customer service experience, preferably in a food service, grocery or retail setting

  • Control inventory levels and expenses such as payroll and shrink to impact bottom-line contribution (profit) for the department
  • Ability to multi-task and react to a variety of situations at one time
  • Practice proper ordering techniques to complete orders by deadlines and participate in inventory process to ensure items are available to support merchandising programs and product promotions
  • Exhibit merchandising skills by attractively displaying products considering seasonality, cross-merchandising opportunities and corporate programs with the aim of educating and enticing customers
  • Assist with meal preparation and planning by providing customers with proper serving guidelines and recommending correct cooking techniques, helping to make great meals easy

  • Managerial/ supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of, passion for and experience working with, meat
  • Passion for food and beverages; knowledge of food and beverage pairings
  • Experience working in a butcher shop
  • Experience utilizing a variety of cooking techniques

Work environment:
  • Work involves continuous interaction with customers and co-workers in a fast-paced environment
  • Typical motions include repetitive hand and arm movements, bending and reaching
  • Responsible for moving and lifting an average of 5 – 20 pounds with a maximum weight lifted of 50 pounds occasionally
