Child Life Specialist - PRN
Founded more than 125 years ago by
German physicians, Research Medical Center is a 490-bed facility and has
become one of the crown jewels in the HCA Midwest Health System. Located in the
heart of Kansas City, Research Medical Center is among the only tertiary care
centers serving Kansas City proper. Over the past century, this institution has

surrounding region with exceptional patient care and leading technology.
Research Medical Center has completed more than $120 million in capital
improvements, including new lobby and admitting areas, renovated and expanded
Cancer Center and Women’s Care Unit, construction of all private patient rooms
and doubling the Emergency Department.
Research Medical Center is currently looking for a Child Life Specialist.
The Child Life Specialist is a member of the Pediatric Burn
Team. The CLS completes a needs assessment on each pediatric patient and
family/guardian in the Burn Center. The
responsibilities of the CLS include play therapy, psychosocial services to
abused/neglected children, program development, and SCAN Team
participation. The CLT also provides
education to the hospital staff, community agencies, and local and national
conferences. Community outreach and
education encompasses leading local support groups for the patient and parents
as well as organizing and teaching parenting classes.
Essential Functions:
Flexibility
for working evenings, weekends or odd shifts necessary.
Thorough
knowledge of child development and recreational treatment of children in the
burn center.
Working
knowledge of child life therapy, hospital routine and general medical
knowledge.
Understanding
of child abuse/neglect procedures and protocols.
Ability
to organize, prioritize and manage child life therapy and child abuse program.
Provides
play therapy for pediatric patients, including medical play preparation for
medical treatment while involving family/siblings in ongoing treatment to the
child in order to maximize treatment.
Provides
psychosocial assessment and care of children of adult patients as referred by the
medical staff.
Provides
chart evaluation, child development information, and observations of pediatric
patients.
Coordinates
treatment with other disciplines. (e.g., physicians, nurses, psychiatric, social
services, etc.)
Purchases
and maintains toys and materials used in the program.
Qualifications:
Certification by the Child Life Certifying Commission of the Child Life
Council. CPR for healthcare provider through AHA upon hire BS or BA in child life/child development/education/recreation or
related therapeutic field. Minimum of one year pediatric experience Must be able to successfully complete established
competencies for the position.
