Specialty Hospital is a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) specializing in the treatment of seriously ill, medically complex patients that require hospitalization for longer periods of time, with an average stay of 3-4 weeks. Specialty Hospital offers specialized, interdisciplinary, compassionate programs in a medical environment that integrates healing and recovery through four main programs of excellence: Cardiopulmonary Program - ventilator and/or tracheostomy weaning and complications of chronic lung disease; Wound Management Program - decubitus, circulatory, and diabetic ulcers, and non-healing surgical wounds; Infectious Disease Program - treatment of multiple infectious disease processes; and Complex Medical/Rehabilitative Program – provide intensive medical management.
SUMMARY OF POSITION GOALS AND DUTIES
The Patient Sitter/Companion, under the direction of the nurse, assists in providing safety care to a designated group of patients. The patient sitter/companion assists in monitoring the patient for safety and specific needs. The patient sitter/companion will assist the nurse and patient care technician in providing a safe environment for the designated group of patients.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Duties
Remains alert and aware of surroundings at all times
Remains at patient’s bedside or in hallway outside rooms throughout shift. Notifies nurse when necessary to leave for meal break
Communicates with primary nurse assigned to patient at beginning of shift and throughout the shift regarding patient’s status
Reports any risks, issues, concerns to the nurse immediately
Directs the patient/significant other to nurse
Notifies nurse or House Supervisor of patient/significant other complaint
Follows through with assignment and notifies House Supervisor if unable to complete or issues arise
Remains calm in emergency situations
Completes documentation as directed correctly; ie; restraint checklist
Environment of Care
Cleans & restocks room & hallway, as appropriate (PPE supplies)
Ensures patient rooms are neat & clean as appropriate, (ie; when assignment is one-on-one)
Identifies any situation that creates an “at risk” environment
Demonstrates knowledge of & performs appropriately to Safety & Disaster Plans
Patient Nutrition
Assists patient with meal trays as appropriate, (ie; when assignment is one-on-one)
Patient Safety
Responds appropriately to patient and call bells
Reports any patient safety concerns to the primary nurse, i.e.: patient at risk to fall
Patient Findings and Documentation
Reports changes in patient's condition immediately to nurse
Communicates on an on-going basis, to include beginning, during & end of shift
Reports abnormal findings immediately
Education Required:
Must be able to read, write and understand instructions
Experience Required:
6 months experience in a patient care setting is preferred
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Good verbal skills, good reading/comprehension of verbal and written instructions, good interpersonal skills, follows verbal instructions, good customer relations skills
