As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

COMMUNITY SCHOOL HEALTH NURSE

The school nurse will work within the School District of Hillsborough County, Florida.

The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems. The school nurse is uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment, and referral procedures. Duties will include nursing assessments for students with health problems or at high-risk for developing health problems.

School nurses are also responsible for training and supervising Licensed Practical Nurses functioning in the role of Health Assistant as mandated by the Nurse Practice Act, along with training and monitoring Unlicensed Assistive Personnel. The nurse must have the ability to multi-task and communicate effectively with students, parents and staff.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) with and a valid Registered Nurse license with the State of Florida.

The ideal candidate/employee must be willing to work a 10 ½ months position with unpaid leave during the summer break. This position requires a current certification in First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation.

Responsibilities include:

Provide mandated health screening to students along with referrals and follow-up as needed.

Counsel students, staff and family members in the area of physical, emotional and social health.

Assure that school personnel who are assigned to administer medication or perform procedures are properly trained.

Develop care plans for students with health care needs that must be addressed during the school day.

Review student health records to insure compliance with the immunization requirements for school attendance.

Minimum Qualifications:

Valid State of Florida Registered Nurse license

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)

Note: Candidates selected for interview will be required to furnish proof of licensure and education (i.e., license, diploma and/or transcripts)

Current certification in First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

2 years of experience in school health, pediatrics, public health, critical care or emergency room.

Other Desirable Qualifications:

2 years of experience supervising health staff

2 years of experience providing health presentations

Current State Employees - Salary for current employees is based on employee’s current payband/ paygrade. Salary for promotions will be based on budget availability and Senior Management Team approval.
