Copper Hills Youth Center is a 197-bed private residential treatment center for adolescents 12-17 years of age. We counsel, teach and mentor children placed in our care and give each child a chance to make successful changes. We strive to improve lives and help children help themselves. At Copper Hills, we treat boys and girls who have emotional, behavioral and psychiatric disorders, including anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression. We also specialize in caring for patients with Asperger's syndrome. For youth with co-existing substance abuse problems, we offer weekly individualized therapy that focuses on education, recovery and abstinence. Our accredited private school allows students to continue their education while receiving treatment.

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB

The primary therapist provides psychotherapeutic services to residents under the direction of the Director of Clinical Services. Therapists serve as a member of the interdisciplinary team supporting the unit's treatment program and philosophy to assure the deliverance of quality treatment and implements the therapeutic treatment plan by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Has a general psychiatric knowledge base including DSM IV disorder symptoms.

2. Observes residents for abnormal physical or mental behavior and monitors progress with components of treatment plan.

3. Provides individual and family therapy in a timely manner, using appropriate treatment modalities.

4. Provides group process oriented therapy as assigned in a timely manger using appropriate treatment modalities.

5. Attends and actively participates in assigned treatment team meetings with completion of all reviews if assigned. Contacts and schedules counseling sessions with family, significant others and involved agencies.

6. Acts as liaison with family and other agencies.

7. Participates in training and development for purpose of professional growth and skill enhancement, including hospital in service training, mandatory skills and all staff meeting.

8. Maintains appropriate boundaries with residents and is able to understand the role of transference and counter transference in the therapeutic process. Has understanding of professional confidentiality and ethical responsibility to residents.

9. Interacts with mental health workers and shift managers in obtaining feedback regarding resident behaviors and intervention as assigned. Participates as a team member by cooperating with mental health workers and demonstrates compromise and expression of opinions as appropriate.

10. Attends staff meetings as assigned and performs duties as a positive role model for residents and colleagues.

11. Utilizes chain of command in all aspects of program and follows organization's policies and procedures.

12. Completes psychosocial assessments as assigned to identify treatment focus by interviewing resident, family and significant others within specified policy time frames.

13. Completes master treatment plan and reviews as assigned with the resident in specified policy time frames, identifying problems, long and short term goals and interventions.

14. Updates the master treatment plan as assigned on a consistent basis and ensures it reflect current treatment goals.

15. Individual and family treatment is conducted and documented in the medical record within the designated time frames.

16. Ensures that progress notes are timely and written in a clear and legible manner. Master treatment plan goals are coordinated with sessions. Notes are clinically pertinent.

17. Understands and is capable of determining which residents are at a higher risk level and the responsibilities associated with keeping those and other residents safe.

18. Understands the circumstances that would require an Incident Report and understand the reporting procedure.

19. Organizational Skills. Allocates and utilizes resources and information efficiently. Prioritizes tasks, balances resident care with other duties and manages time effectively.

20. Reliability/Dependability. Arrives for work in a timely and regular manner. Notifies supervisor in a timely manner of unscheduled absences, vacation, and other time off.

21. Initiative / Flexibility. Exercises initiative on the job. Demonstrates flexibility and adapts to changing circumstances, priorities, resources and needs.

22. Will provide supervisors with time frame availability prior to a job offer. Will be available to provide PRN therapy services 80% of the time called upon to provide support.

23. PRN therapist will take special consideration to get information from primary therapist on the goals and focus of each therapy session being completed, and document those session goals in accordance with instruction from primary therapist.

QUALIFICATIONS :

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 1. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A minimum of a masters degree in social work, marriage and family therapy, clinical or counseling psychology or other recognized mental health field. Must be currently licensed in the state of Utah through the department of professional licensure in their field or may be a licensed intern working under direct clinical supervision. (LCSW, LCHMC, LPC, LCPC or LMFT) Requires written and oral communication skills, ability to prioritize time and responsibilities, be capable of accurate and prompt documentation in the medical record, strong background in family, individual and group therapy, working knowledge of DSM IV diagnosis and ability to work as a member of a multi disciplinary team.

Must be willing and physically capable of responding to a physically aggressive patient using the CPI system. This procedure may include but is not limited to kneeling, squatting, bending and lifting.

2. LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Regularly uses terminologies and prepares drafts of proposals.

3. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

4. REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to think and act quickly and calmly in an emergency situation, and make independent decisions.

5. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid State Drivers' License with appropriate Endorsement

6. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant, and peripheral vision, color and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee may occasionally be required to physically restrain clients, using authorized restraint procedures as a last resort for protection of client and staff.

7. WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment for this position is a residential facility or day treatment school setting. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee will be exposed to clients who may ask inappropriate personal questions, display socially unacceptable personal behaviors, use profanity and sexually explicit phrases, make insulting remarks or threats regarding appearance, age, sex, or race, and exhibit defiance, dishonesty, and assaultive or self destructive behaviors. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, and the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. Regular local travel is required as deemed by supervisor.
