POSITION PURPOSE -
The Linux Architect is responsible to set overall platform direction and strategy including design, implementation and lifecycle management of our Linux Server environments. The Architect is primarily responsible for maintaining the Linux Server roadmap for all Linux server technologies and related tools including automated system provisioning, disaster recovery, and system maintenance. In this role, one is expected to contribute to and often set direction for many related areas including: OS strategy, deployment processes, support tools, clustering, current and next generation infrastructure paradigms. This position is responsible for implementation, oversight and technology governance processes and associated teaching and mentoring of Business and IT Associates in proper use of the technology. Work requires critical judgment, the highest level of initiative, and complex reasoning to solve technical and business issues.

• Linux and Unix platform strategy and conceptual roadmaps
• OS Automation including deployment, patching, support and configuration management
• Remote Site strategy and conceptual roadmap including technology selection and deployment methodology
• OS governance including lifecycle management, SLA compliance, security compliance and sustainability
• Technology direction for enabling technologies including next generation infrastructure paradigms and User Empowerment.

MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Lead design, development, and deployment of technical and application solutions to meet business requirements that are cost effective and sustainable. Deliver conceptual, logical, and physical solution specifications.

Translate business requirements using complex methods and models to determine appropriate system solutions.

Provide input into annual budget planning for technology migrations and project cost estimation.

Research, identify, test, certify, and select technology products required for solution delivery.

Establish and implement technology migration strategies for a specific application or architecture within an IT portfolio.

Lead technology review meetings and ensure appropriate governance processes are followed.

NATURE AND SCOPE -
Typically reports to Senior Architect, Senior Manager, or Director

No associates report to this role on a permanent basis, but requires the leadership of a work group: assign and review work, train and contribute to performance appraisal (but not hiring, firing or disciplinary action).

ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS -
• Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
• Typically requires overnight travel less than 10% of the time.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS -
• Must be eighteen years of age or older.
• Must pass the Drug Test.
• Must successfully complete any required training or orientation courses

EDUCATION REQUIRED -
The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

YEARS OF RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE - 9

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS -
Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS -
• At least eight years of information technology experience, of which at least four years should be as an Architect or Lead Engineer.
• Strong collaboration, communication, and people leadership skills.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field preferred.
• Experience in application and operating system deployment to Linux/UNIX systems.
• Knowledge of testing methodologies and approaches (experience in ensuring quality for large-scale projects)
• On-call (nights/weekends) coverage expected but infrequent.
• Ability to collaborate within and work across multiple teams.
• Knowledge of the Linux solutions with integration of cross platform technologies like Windows and legacy Unix.
Enterprise architectural experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, including the core OS, systems management solutions, middleware and integration of cross platform technologies. In depth knowledge of x86/x64 hardware architecture and relationships within storage, network and facilities framework. Expert technical proficiency with the Linux platform including demonstrated ability to design and implement highly automated deployment and support strategies. Design experience with distributed application frameworks including: virtualization, cloud strategies and other implementations of converged infrastructure with shared services. Comprehensive understanding of systems, applications, and/or networks so that practical solutions can be provided that factor system performance, usability, quality, cross-system interdependencies, scalability, and overall cost to develop and maintain. Strong problem solving and analytical skills. Strong oral and written communication skills. Preferred experience using and designing solutions for the following platforms: RHEL, Ubuntu, SUSE, RHEL variants (Centos, OEL), AIX and HP-UX; including virtualization, clustering and automated system deployment and administration strategies. Knowledge of deployment and configuration management tools like Red Hat Satellite Server and Puppet including reporting and alerting approaches. Some knowledge of Retail and eCommerce applications is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES -
Expert technical proficiency in one or more of the following: Retail applications, Windows platform, UNIX platforms, MVS COBOL, JAVA, J2EE, Relational Databases, Websphere Application Server, Websphere Commerce, Websphere MQ, Networking (Voice, LAN, WAN), SAP, Siebel, Peoplesoft.

Comprehensive understanding of systems, applications, and/or networks so that practical solutions can be provided that factor system performance, usability, quality, cross-system interdependencies, scalability, and overall cost to develop and maintain.

Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

Strong oral and written communications skills.
