About this job

Performs variety of procedures including specimen collection, specimen processing, phlebotomy and waived and/or limited moderate complex laboratory testing. Performs all duties in compliance with laboratory safety and infection control practices. This position supports compliance and Kaiser Permanente's Code of Conduct by adhering to federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements and Kaiser Permanente's policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:

* Collect and process patient samples in accordance with established procedures.

* Perform waived and/or limited moderately complex laboratory testing in accordance with standards set forth in the approved Laboratory Procedures Manual. Reports and maintains records of patient results according to protocol. ("Waived" and moderately complex are recognized laboratory test complexity classifications as defined in CLIA 88 federal regulations).

* Packages specimens for transport and tracks specimens to the final destination in accordance with KPMAS laboratory policies/procedures and/or DOT regulations. Arranges for special transport when necessary.

* Follows instrument/equipment maintenance procedures, troubleshooting procedures and maintains records of actions. Refers major problems to the supervisor or designee.

* Communicates specimen inquiries, problems, and investigations to appropriate medical, clinical and technical staff in a timely manner according to established laboratory procedures. In addition, communicates specimen collection instructions to patients in a clear and concise manner and schedules laboratory appointments for specified tests.

* Maintains adequate inventory of clerical and laboratory supplies.

* Identifies unexpected or unreasonable delays and brings any upset patient or unusual situation to the attention of the supervisor or designee.

* Performs clerical duties and other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

* One (1) year of experience working in a clinical environment including laboratory testing, phlebotomy, and specimen processing OR successful completion of a MLA Clinical Rotation in a Kaiser Permanente Laboratory.

* Pass MLA competency exam (internal to Kaiser Permanente) with 80% as minimum passing score for every discipline during probationary period or prior to promotion.

Education

* High school graduate or GED required.

* Proper documentation for education required (i.e. copy of diploma or international equivalency report). Individuals with foreign diplomas must provide an international equivalency report.

* Successful completion of MLA course with a passing grade at an accredited college or university.

License, Certification, Registration

* American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification or completion of AHA BLS certification within 6 months after employment required.

Additional Requirements:

* Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology by passing test with a test score of at least 80%.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Phlebotomy certification by nationally recognized agency preferred.
