DESCRIPTION:

The Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) within the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) program will report directly to the Assistant Community Health Nursing Director. The incumbent will be responsible for clinical services provided within the STD clinic located in the Health District Center or the West Perrine Health Center. This position is clinically responsible to the Medical Director of the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade. ARNP shall be responsible for the following activities as consistent with the Nurse Practice Act, collaborative practice agreement, and department rules and policies.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

The incumbent will be responsible for direct clinical contact with clients by completing medical history taking, physical examination, laboratory specimen collection, diagnosis, treatment, plan for follow-up, counseling/education, health promotion and risk reduction counseling for STDs including HIV counseling and testing, and routing patients requiring disease intervention counseling to DIS assigned to clinic.

Perform microscopy and other laboratory test as indicated, based on their education, training and staffing patterns. Documents in the HMS System the proper HMC codes, current procedure codes and ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes. Will be responsible for ensuring that abnormal Pap smear receives assessment and follow up when done as part of a diagnostic procedure for STD determination. Evaluates and manages all aspects of care for patients with medical diagnosis or a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

Performs a comprehensive patient assessment inclusive of psychosocial, maturational and spiritual needs, pain status, incorporating advanced theoretical and experiential expertise by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies. Searches for evidence/data with a potential for new problem. Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment; works collaboratively to formulate treatment plans.

Utilizes critical analysis in formulating a goal directed, prioritized plan of care. Implements appropriate management (admission and discharge care, out-patient care, medication regimen) based on laboratory results, physical assessment, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, and therapeutic measures, in accordance with written practice protocols. Prescribes, evaluates therapeutic effect and modifies medications. Documents patient care data.

Determines need for/orders/obtains appropriate diagnostic studies. Interprets results of diagnostic studies.

Makes a medical diagnosis based upon interpretation of assessment, history, physical exam and diagnostic findings. Provides, institutes, monitors and evaluates continuing care of acute and chronically ill patients.

Makes referrals for follow-up to appropriate community resources

Documents appropriately the medications and medical supplies used in order to accurately track supplies. Tracks medications within the database provided by the State of Florida. Works with the Assistant Community Health Nursing Director in developing inservices and training material for all clinical providers. Collaborate with Medical Director, other physicians and staff to ensure that all scheduled patients receive treatment as requested on their appointment date. Keep patients informed of their medical condition and the course of treatment being prescribed. Provide written teaching materials to all patients who are receiving treatment for STD or other medical diagnosis, as well as general and specific drug-related materials. Maintain patient information materials accessible to all patients in the office

All clinicians shall participate in the training and supervision of advanced practice nurses and medical students. Recognizes needs for/obtains physician's assistance, input and guidance as indicated within limits of practice scope.

Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed.

Monitors medication and initiates appropriate therapies for certain conditions and alters medications according to variations in a patient's response within established protocols.

Fits patients for diaphragms; inserts intrauterine devices; and manages patients on oral contraceptives.

Coordinates the implementation and continuity of maternal and infant care through activities such as home and hospital findings, and guidance of patients and families to appropriate community resources.

Observes and differentiates between signs and symptoms associated with normal aging and those indicative of pathologic changes.

Differentiates between pathologic social behavior and the usual life style of the aged person.

Plans and conducts family, patient, and health education by counseling and fostering inclusion of the educational concepts into all phases of the health care provided.

Participates in the orientation and the staff development programs for personnel assisting with patient care.

Oversees the work activities of ancillary personnel.

Performs related work as required.
