SR SYSTEMS ENGINEER - System Center Operations Manager (SCOM)

POSITION PURPOSE -
Senior System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) Engineer (SCOM 2012)

The Senior Systems Engineer develops, maintains and supports The Home Depot's Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2012 R2 infrastructure. These responsibilities include authoring management packs, automating agent (Window\UNIX\Linux) installations and implementing SCOM infrastructure improvements in order to effectively monitor Home Depot data centers, stores and distribution centers. The ideal candidate can will be able to demonstrate technical proficiency in leveraging SCOM 2012 to monitor large distributed environments.

• MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY -
  
  
• Perform installation, maintenance and support of system software, hardware and infrastructure and user support for moderately complex projects. May oversee this effort if acting in team lead capacity.
  
  
• Perform store & SSC engineering and roll-out implementation.
  
  
• Perform configuration, debugging and support for infrastructure platform for moderately complex projects.
  
  
• Perform root cause analysis for service interruption recovery; create preventative measures.
  
  
• Provide technical direction to System and Associate Engineers, Operations Specialists, and contractors.
  
  
• Interface with Business Stakeholders on all applicable projects. Update manager on all escalated issues.

• Responsible for helping others and providing on-the-job training or guidance

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS -

Must be eighteen years of age or older.
Must pass the Drug Test.
Must successfully complete any required training or orientation courses.

EDUCATION REQUIRED -

The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a high school diplomas and/or GED.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS -

Frequent periods are spent standing or sitting in the same location with some opportunity to move about; occasionally there may be a need to stoop or lift light objects (typically less than 8 pounds).

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS -

Knowledge and experience with computer hardware, operating systems and system software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS -
Minimum of 3-4 years' experience administering Microsoft System Center Operations Manager.

- Solid understanding of all System Center Operations Manager infrastructure components
- Moderate to advanced management pack authoring proficiencies: designing, configuring, deploying, trouble shooting, customizing and providing peer review
- WBEM technology and platform performance modeling (counter/objects)
- SQL database technology as it relates to System Center Operations Manager (i.e. SQL Server Reporting Services, Data Warehouse vs Operations Manager DB.)
- Authoring moderate to complex Structured Query Language (SQL) statements with respect to SCOM relational databases.
- Moderate SCOM PowerShell commandlet experience
- Perform debugging and support for multiple infrastructure platforms on moderately complex projects.
- Perform root cause analysis for service interruption recovery; create preventative measures and present to management.
- Perform Store & Store Support Center engineering and roll-out implementations.
- Knowledge of HTTP, HTTPS, TCP/IP, SMTP, DNS and SSH
- Knowledge of LAN/WAN topologies
- Ability to recognize potential problem areas and provide advice and direction on the use of technology tools and problem solving processes
- Knowledge of Windows server, Windows client and Unix\Linux server operating system architectur- Familiar with many of the most common SCOM management packs designed by Microsoft to monitor Microsoft applications.
- Effectively working directly with Microsoft's support organization to improve SCOM and perform root cause analysis for technical issues impacting The Home Depot.

Preferred Technical Skills
- Shell scripting experience using common Unix-like shells such as bash or csh.
- Management pack tuning and testing experience or similar software test experience.
- Packaging and deploying the SCOM agent using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, HP Server Automation or Puppet.
- Automated installation and configuration of the SCOM Agent for Unix\Linux operating systems
- Unix\Linux SCOM management pack authoring experience
- Authoring SCOM management packs using Visual Studio Authoring Extensions
- Proficiency using Silect MP Studio
- Experience in application/network performance monitoring and availability
- Enterprise-level PowerShell scripting and automation experience with system administration, support, design, and implementation
- Some understanding of System Center Orchestrator and System Center Configuration Manager
- Microsoft System Center Orchestrator run book authoring skills are a plus.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory
Preferred Qualifications:
- BS Computer Science, MIS or related field, Master's Degree is a plus.
- 5-7 years' experience is preferred.
- General knowledge of Home Depot is helpful.
