About this job

Exciting career opportunities for innovative engineers and scientists at L3 Communications, Electron Devices Division in San Carlos, CA.

A recognized leader in microwave and millimeter-wave vacuum electron device technology, L-3 provides a wide range of high power products for the military, commercial, medical, industrial and scientific sectors. Products include broadband helix traveling wave tubes (TWTs), high efficiency miniature TWTs, compact millimeter-wave TWTs, high power coupled cavity TWTs, high power klystrons, crossed-field devices, as well as microwave and millimeter-wave power modules (MPMs).

This highly visible position will have two primary responsibilities:

1. Manage the materials and processes associated with the manufacture of metallized ceramic components. Act as a technical resource in regards to the properties and processes associated with ceramics, metals, elastomers and thin film coatings. Design and maintain production equipment, document processes, and write materials specifications. Work closely with engineers, scientists, and production personnel, and initiate changes to drawings and procedures to improve the performance and quality of our products.

2. Lead analysis efforts to resolve materials and fabricated assembly failures. Participate in cross-functional teams to determine root cause and implement appropriate corrective action.

* A B.S. in Material Science and Engineering or a closely related discipline is required.

* Ideal candidate should possess a strong background in ceramic materials and/or metallurgical processing.

* Understanding of the manufacturing techniques associated with the fabrication of precision ceramic parts.

* Familiarity with the properties of raw and metallized ceramic components, e.g., AlO, BeO, AIN, and APBN.

* Familiarity with silicone RTV and related moldable elastomer compounds.

* Familiarity with thin film coating deposition techniques.

* Familiarity with the metallurgy of copper, stainless steel, kovar, refractory metals, etc.

* A good understanding of basic powder metallurgy processing principles and methods.

* Familiarity with thermionic dispenser cathode technology.

* A good understanding of industrial electro- and wet-chemistry processes, e.g., etching, plating, etc.

* Familiarity with the standard methods for joining ceramic-to-metal and metal-to-metal components, e.g., brazing, welding, etc.

* Experience in the preparation and evaluation of metallurgical cross-sections.

* Experience in laboratory best practices and standard safety procedures.

* Working knowledge of surface and bulk materials characterization techniques, e.g., ESCA-XPS, EDS, AES, etc.

* Proficiency in MS Office and mechanical design software, e.g., SolidWorks.

* Ability to closely interact with personnel from diverse technical backgrounds.
