Job Summary PURPOSE OF POSTION:

Serve as the point of administrative and clinical leadership for Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NP), Clinical Care Coordinators (CCC), Physician Assistants (PA) and Registered Nurses (RN) in the clinic and procedural areas in Congenital Heart Center. Provide coordination between management and patient care activities consistent with the institutional and programmatic objectives for achieving high standards of pediatric cardiology and cardiothoracic patient care, as well as other institutional and programmatic goals and objectives. Provide essential coordination and collaboration between patient care units and the APT and clinic and procedural area nursing services within the CHC. Plan and oversee APN/CCC/PA/RN orientation consistent with organizational and regulatory requirements. Oversee and direct expert care to patients in the CHC within the individual collaborative agreement and scope of practice. Develop and monitor the implementation of new standards and techniques. Exercise clinical nursing leadership over practice, staff development, and research.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Directly responsible to the Co-Directors of the Congenital Heart Center (CHC), specifically the Head of the Section of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology and the Director of Pediatric Perinatal Psychiatric Nursing Services. Collaborative relationship with the Director of Advanced Practice Nursing, the Administrative Director of the CHC, CHC nurse managers and Department Administrators.

Responsibilities* CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership

1. Develop and implement programmatic goals and objectives which include the establishment of standards of practice in patient care consistent with national professional and regulatory guidelines.

2. Develop new and revise existing programmatic policies/procedures and standards of Nursing Care consistent with nursing at UMHHC.

3. Align APN & Nursing goals and objectives with CHC goals and objectives.

4. Advise and assist with the establishment of priorities and program development.

5. Partner with medical staff and other disciplines for the successful implementation of CHC and UMHS patient care strategies. Assist in the resolution of interdisciplinary operational issues.

6. Attend and participate in the PCTU and 11W Mott Joint Practice Committees.

7. Facilitate communication with managers, peers, health care providers, and physicians with regard to operational, interdisciplinary, clinical, team development, performance review and others to be determined and as appropriate.

8. Anticipate, investigate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

9. In consultation and collaboration with other clinicians/disciplines, participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of CHC patient management strategies and the facilitation of improved patient outcomes.

10. Lead or actively participate in multidisciplinary groups in the review, evaluation, and implementation of CHC, and Children's and Women's Hospital objectives.

11. Participate in identification, selection and evaluation of products and equipment for CHC patient management.

12. Attend and participate in the CHC Coordinating Council.

13. Manages within approved budgeted expectations for revenue and expenses of CHC APT. Provide information regarding budget variances to CHC Co-Directors and Director of PPP Nursing Services.

14. Collaborate and coordinate with other disciplines to plan, evaluate, and implement the budget needs for the CHC including activity planning and future growth.

15. Attend and actively participate in departmental, nursing and hospital meetings as appropriate/requested. Maintain relationship with nursing leadership through-out C&W and UMHS.

16. Models UMHS and Children's and Women's Hospital organizational values including Patient and Family Centered Care.

Personnel:

17. Supervise operations of the CHC Advanced Practice Teams and nurses in the clinic and procedural areas.

18. Responsibility for scheduling of staff and/or monitor initiation and implementation of scheduling process which is consistent with care requirements and responds to varying patient activity and patient mix.

19. Responsibility for staffing needs and position qualifications consistent with the respective objectives. Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.

20. Administration of CHC APT and registered nurses and other personnel in the clinic and procedural areas including interviewing, hiring, termination as appropriate, and evaluating performance by conducting annual performance evaluations. Counsel and discipline as needed to enable achievement of departmental and institutional objectives, particularly as related to high quality patient care. Provide constructive and timely feedback to CHC APT staff and registered nurses in the clinic and procedural areas regarding their work performance. Assist in goal setting for performance and professional development.

21. Coaches, supports, directs, and delegates to promote performance of CHC APT members and registered nurses in the clinic and procedural areas.

22. Interpret and implement University and hospital personnel policies, programs, procedures, and the standards of regulatory agencies and bargaining unit contract(s). Ensure their uniform and correct application.

23. Promote an environment to improve work processes, enhance customer and employee satisfaction, and reduce waste and cost.

24. Attains and maintains an inclusive work environment that is conducive to meeting the organization's expectation for exemplary customer service.

25. Implements and evaluates an effective plan for work area changes and transition management.

Quality Assurance and Research:

26. Participate in concurrent and retrospective evaluation of patient care consistent with the hospital quality assurance and quality improvement program. Through this review process, evaluate and recommend changes and improvements in areas affecting the quality of patient care.

27. Initiate and cooperate in applied research in health care in keeping with the institutional objectives of maintaining prominence in developing new modes of clinical and evidenced based practice.

28. Reviews and communicates institutional/CHC data (patient/customer satisfaction and financial) regularly.

Education:

29. Assess and develop ongoing competencies of CHC APT and nurses in the clinic and procedural areas in accordance to established competency guidelines.

30. Coordinate and facilitate opportunities (time and resources) for continuing education of the CHC APT and nurses in the clinic and procedural areas. Initiate, plan, analyze, and participate in nursing/CHC APT staff development programs, conferences, and workshops.

31. Plan and oversee CHC APT and clinical and procedural areas nursing orientation consistent with organizational and regulatory requirements. Assure comprehensive organizational orientation in addition to role/department specific content.

32. Facilitate, coordinate, and monitor the clinical learning experience of nursing and other students.

33. Provide mentorship to members of the CHC APT and registered nurses in the clinic and procedural areas.

Professional Development:

34. Participate in own performance evaluation and establishment of plan for self-development and learning consistent with goals of UMHS.

35. Attend and participate in activities to promote own continued learning and professional growth.

36. Participate in professional organizations

37. Advance nursing practice through publication and presentations.

Clinical Practice:

38. Direct, oversee, and supervise comprehensive assessment, diagnoses, and evaluation of individualized plans of care for pediatric cardiology/cardiac surgery patients within the scope of advanced practice nursing.

39. Assure documentation of care is accurate, clear, legible and within the defined parameters of the electronic medical record.

40. Collaborate with physicians and health care team members in the management and problem-solving for difficult and complex pediatric cardiology/cardiac surgery patients; initiate referrals appropriately.

Required Qualifications* 1. Master Degree in Nursing with current State of Michigan license required.

2. Strong knowledge of management and leadership principles and practices is required.

3. Minimum of five years of experience as manager and leader.

4. Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Michigan.

5. Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to perform as role model to nursing staff.

6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrated maximum collaboration in a team environment and matrix organization.

Desired Qualifications* 16. Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Current Nurse Practitioner Certification Preferred.

17. Preferred 7-10 years experience within a healthcare setting with demonstrated experience in quality/process improvement.

18. Knowledge of evidence based practice concepts to incorporate in continuous quality improvement processes within and across units.

19. Ability to use various computer applications for access of internet information, literature search, presentation support/enhancement, word processing, data processing and patient care.

20. Knowledge of budget and financial management.

21. Knowledge of clinical research administration.

22. Familiarity of principles of Patient and Family Centered Care

23. Demonstrated ability to lead collaboratively, gaining team trust and agreement toward future state

24. Demonstrated presence and participation in multi-center collaborative work

25. Demonstrated ability to develop and present individual research and process improvement locally and nationally.
