Complies with established Tenet and HIM departmental policies and procedures, objectives, safety, environmental and infection control standards, as well as applicable regulations and laws.

Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department and interdepartmental, as well as maintain good employee relations.

Consistently demonstrates professional and proactive attitude and actions in all encounters with employees, hospital staff, physicians and patients.

Ensures patient/employee privacy and dignity by maintaining confidentiality with no infractions.

Complies with hospital/departmental dress code, wearing nametag and maintaining a professional demeanor.

Alerts HIM Director and Coding Manager to coding and/or ethical issues involving other departments proactively and positively.

Correctly codes and abstracts emergency room visits, outpatient services according to ICD-9 and CPT guidelines.

Demonstrates ability to meet or exceed outlined coding accuracy expectations.

Assists customers seeking data collected by coding and technical staff.

Ensures quality of Coding through continuing education, in-service and other protocols while maintaining expected productivity.

Works closely with Case Management to resolve issues relating to discharge disposition and patient status changes, verifying accuracy.

Correctly assigns Modifiers when appropriate.

Queries the Physician in the absence of adequate documentation for clarification.

Attends Tenet Coding Workshops, educational conference calls, other coding seminars, and; participates in all formal and informal coding discussions at Spalding Regional Hospital/Sylvan Grove Hospital.

Identifies duplicate account numbers and takes appropriate action.

Assists Coding Manager in working unbilled accounts as appropriate.

Complies with regulations and laws governing Health Information Management.

Effectively manages HPF coding and coding priority queues along with Cerner application.

Accurately enters code hold reasons into abstracting system.

Maintains crendential(s) through required continuing education. All coders have to have 10 hours continuing education regardless of credentials.

Responds timely to requests regarding coding issues.

Refers questions/problems timely to Coding Manager for resolution

High school diploma, formal HIM education with accreditation or certification at the national level preferred. In lieu of accreditation or certification, one year coding experience in an acute care setting with education in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and related courses are acceptable.
