This position is located in Prince William County in Virginia.

 

The Associate Medical Director organizes and assumes overall responsibility for the medical component of Optum Palliative and Hospice Care (OPHC) for both the inpatient and outpatient Palliative Care and Hospice programs. In collaboration with the patient's attending physician and the Interdisciplinary Team, is responsible for the palliation and management of the patient's terminal illness and conditions related to the terminal illness. If the attending physician is unavailable, the Associate Medical Director is responsible for meeting the medical needs of the patient.

 

The Associate Medical Director is responsible for assuming all the responsibilities of the Medical Director in the absence of the Medical Director or under the direction of the Medical Director for specific locations. The Associate Medical Director must meet the same qualifications as the Medical Director in the State in which he/she is rendering services.

 

Primary Responsibilities:


  • Provide oversight and/or supervise all assigned palliative and hospice, nurse practitioners, and contract physicians in coordination with the Executive Director and Medical Director
  • Participate in and provide oversight of the palliative care consultation service in the designated geographic areas
  • Responsible for the overall medical component of the care and treatment of terminally ill patients and their families in the Hospice program and for all seriously ill patients in the Palliative Care program
  • Provides or delegates associate medical director responsibilities to ensure continuous support for all medical care within the palliative care and hospice programs
  • Inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, inclusive of daily rounds and all other clinical and administrative responsibilities
  • Participate or delegate responsibility for associate medical director participation in daily rounds at designated  hospitals and assure availability at those units  of continuous medical director support to accomplish the responsibilities of this position
  • Provide palliation and management of symptoms related to the terminal illness
  • Assure that all patients receive appropriate measures to control uncomfortable symptoms
  • Assure overall continuity of the hospice medical services for the OPHC home community program and  all inpatient units
  • Perform or delegate to other associate medical directors, attendance at IDG and ongoing collaboration with the Hospice Team to ensure that the medical needs of the patient are met and providing oversight of the plan of care
  • Collaborate with the patient's attending physician to develop and update the patient's plan of care, to identify needs not met by the attending physician, and to ensure pain and symptom management and control
  • Serve as medical resource to hospice staff, patients, families, and attending physicians regarding pain and symptom control management
  • Ensure provision of direct medical services to patients either directly or through arrangements, as appropriate, in the absence of the patient's attending physician
  • Demonstrate knowledge in communications and counseling patient and family in dealing with end of life issues
  • Participate in resolution of interpersonal conflict and issues of clinical and ethical concerns
  • Document care provided in the electronic medical record providing evidence of progression of the end- stage disease process
  • Provide Pre-election Evaluation and Counseling services
  • Review patient's clinical information before certifying and recertifying terminal illness and provides written certification at appropriate levels of care as per standards
  • Complete and/or ensure Face to Face visits are completed prior to recertifying hospice patients as per standards
  • Complete and submit in a timely fashion all billing worksheets for clinical visits
  • Complete, sign and submit all clinical notes for inpatients on the day of service and for all outpatients within 24 hours of the date of service

Requirements

Required Qualifications:


  • License to practice medicine or osteopathy in the state of the Palliative Care and Hospice Program or the ability to obtain
  • Board certification in a primary care specialty, a working knowledge in the principles of palliative medicine and symptom management
  • Training and experience in the psychological and medical needs of the terminally ill
  • Knowledge of palliative care with particular emphasis on control of symptoms associated with advanced life threatening illness
  • Ability to work collaboratively with patient's attending physicians to implement the palliative care and hospice plan of care
  • Ability to work collaboratively with hospice employees and volunteers as part of an interdisciplinary group
  • Reliable transportation
  • Proficient in business computer skills

  • Palliative Care Board Certification or Eligibility
