Job Summary The College of Pharmacy is seeking an exceptional animal technician for a full-time position with extensive knowledge and experience in a research laboratory. The successful applicant will provide technical laboratory support by performing complex animal work involved in the handling, care, health monitoring, and treatment of laboratory mice and rats involved in research. Job expectations include knowledge and experience in determining suitable technical methods and performing procedures with professional judgment. Candidates with excellent communications skills, time management and willingness to work a flexible schedule are desirable. Training will be provided if the candidate does not have experience in all areas.

Responsibilities* The position involves all aspects of animal research: preparing mice and rats for various types of surgical and non-surgical procedures, administration of therapeutic drugs on mice and rats via various routes (subcutaneous, IP, IV, oral gavage) and end-of-study necropsies, harvest, and proper handling and storage of valuable study samples (bleeding, tissue collection). The position would also involve cell culture, injection or implanting of cancer cells or xenografts through various routes (subcutaneous, IP, IC, orthotopic), orchiectomy procedure and monitoring tumor growth by calipers and bioluminescent imaging. Keeping an organized record of measurements and observations for inspection is required. Dissolution testing of drug formulations, and clinical biological sample preparation including plasma and biological fluids will also be performed by this person. He or she will also be responsible for preparing reports independently and assisting in the writing and amending of animal protocols.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree with specialization in animal science, biology or a related field; or degree in veterinary technology. (Master's desired)

Ability to function independently as well as part of the team.

Must be able to follow UCUCA guidelines to identify clinical symptoms of end-stage illness in mice, or identify mice in distress.

Must be able to perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts, and bedding materials for prolonged periods of time.

Must be able to work with Hazardous Substances in compliance with OSEH Guidelines

Reasonable experience in the care, handling, and treatment of laboratory animals.

Reasonable knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in animal care and laboratory activities.

Desired Qualifications* Experience in molecular biology such as cloning, RT-PCR, quantitative PCR and Western blot would be an asset but is not required.
