Responsibilities/Behaviorsof a Sitter
- The assigned RN/LPN remains responsible for the patient's nursing carethroughout the shift
- The sitter will complete Sitter Flow Sheet
- Sitters may not leave the unit with the patient unless directed orpermitted to do so by the RN/LPN or Clinical Coordinator
- Sitters are not permitted to discuss the patient with anyone except thepatient's direct caregivers (send visitors or family to the RN/LPN forinformation)
- Converse with the patient about general subjects
- Avoid giving advice
- Do not argue with the patient
- Do not share personal information with the patient (phone numbers,address, marital status)
- Encourage patient involvement in other activities such as reading,watching television, etc.
- Provide privacy during a medical procedure or therapy by informing ahealthcare team member providing treatment that the patient is on one to onecontinuous supervision.
- Sitters shall not leave the patient along; rather they must requestrelief from their position for breaks and meals
- Sitters shall schedule break times with the assigned RN
- Sitter will report any information related to patient safety to thenurse
- All sitters will follow precautions signs placed on patients door(contact precautions, chemo precautions)
- Provide a safe/caring environment
- Remain within arms length at all times, maintain direct visualcontact/observation, including during family visits, unless directed by amember of the heath care team.
- At no time will a barrier such as a door to the bathroom or curtainprevent sitter from remaining one arms length and maintaining directobservation
- Direct visual observation means the sitter maintains eye contact withthe patient and is not allowed to read, sleep or work on a computer HighSchool Graduate/GED
6months prior experience as a Sitter preferred.
Mustpossess the ability to retrieve, communicate and present data andinformation both verbally and in writing required; as is the ability to expressor exchange ideas by means of the spoken and written word. Must be flexible with work scheduling. Involves discretion and independent actionwithin prescribed limits.
