We currently have an opening for a Utility Operator at our power plant in Portsmouth, VA

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned and may vary by location.

Monitors and operates plant equipment to maintain safe, efficient and continuous plant operations.

Makes rounds and checks conditions of designated plant equipment; record operational data on log sheets. Completes assigned inspections.

Maintains and follows all Company policies, procedures and rules within environmental compliance, and safety and health requirements.

Completes all required Environmental Standards and Compliance Training.

Maintains safe and efficient operation of the Ash Handling System, other plant equipment.

Completes water testing and treatment. Tests and treats boiler, cooling, and other plant water systems. Operates demineralization system and maintains efficient demineralization system.

Operates auxiliary plant equipment locally, making necessary adjustments safety and efficiency. Operates and maintains lime slakers.

Assists the Plant Operator in the daily operation and maintenance of the plant from the field.

Conveys materials from storage or work sites to designated area.

Secures lifting attachments to materials and conveys load to destination or signal crane or hoisting operators to move load to destination.

Counts, weighs, and records number of units of materials moved or handled on daily production sheet. Stacks or assembles materials into bundles and bands bundles together (where applicable).

Clamps sections of portable conveyor together or place conveyor sections on blocks or boxes to facilitate movement of materials or products. Lifts heavy objects by hand or with power hoist, and cleans work area, machines, and equipment to assist machine operators (where applicable).

Assemble crates to contain products such as machines or vehicles. Shovels loose materials such as sand, gravel, metals, plastics, or chemicals, into machine hoppers or into vehicles and containers such as wheelbarrows, scrap truck, or barrels.

Completes the Corporate and Plant Training Programs within the time frame prescribed.

Follows standard safety procedures, correct safety and environmental hazards, and reports them to the Shift Supervisor immediately. Reads, understands, and applies information such as, lockout/tagout procedures, safety rules, job hazard analyses, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Works overtime.

Works rotating shifts.

Communicates clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing; as well as communicates clearly whether using in-situ intercom system, two-way radio or face to face.

Anticipates typical problems, identifies potential or recurring problems, and takes appropriate action. Troubleshoots equipment and assists in diagnosing problem areas.

Operates other equipment including, but not limited to, industrial forklifts, manlifts, skid steer type loaders, and other mobile equipment.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or general education degree -- GED - or equivalent

Three or more months related experience and/or training.

Mechanical skills sufficient to perform such tasks as replacement of shear pins, valve repacking, and equipment inspections.

Knowledge and skills to operate power plant auxiliary equipment, such as air compressors and dryers, hydraulic power units, forced draft fans, pumps, spray dryer and absorbers, and lime slakers.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

Licenses as required by State, Federal, Environmental and/or Health/Safety Regulatory agencies .

Supervision Received:

Perform job duties within prescribed standards. Minimal supervision necessary once varied tasks are mastered.

Operate a 1.5 inch fire hose operating at 125 psi line pressure to the extent required to extinguish fire

Operate fire extinguishing equipment ranging from hand held extinguishers to 200 lb portable units

Access confined spaces and pressure vessels through standard 12" by 16" manways

PPE Required:

Work in areas under adverse conditions that may require the donning and use of personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, the following with average fatigue:

Negative pressure respirator

Self-contained breathing apparatus (steel or composite bottle)

Hardhat
