POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Lead , and the Section Supervisor, performs journeyman level Field and Sustainment level service, repairs and overhauls combat, tactical, non-tactical vehicles, equipment and heavy construction equipment. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools. This worker operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency. The mechanic welds broken parts and structural members, may direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment, and may repair, adjust and maintain mining machinery, such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling and cutting machines, and continuous mining machines.

MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:

Performs the full range of overhaul, repair, service and troubleshooting of electronic, hydraulic and mechanical systems of combat, tactical, non-tactical vehicles, equipment and heavy construction equipment at the Field and Sustainment levels of maintenance.

Maintains current on state of the art principals, practices and procedures to be employed. Quantity and quality of work expected and tools and materials to be used.

Ensures work is complete and conforms to standards and requirements IAW technical manuals and local SOPs.

Performs initial, inline and final inspections on jobs.

Assures that equipment and supplies are utilized properly.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

Diagnostic and test equipment; technical manuals to include Electronic Technical Manuals (ETM's), lifting devices, including bridge cranes; material handling equipment. Works with pneumatic and hand tools. May use Microsoft office products and STAMIS system.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Must be able to lift/push/pull 50 lbs. Work will require stooping; climbing; prolonged standing; prolonged sitting; and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical or biological agents. Employee use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required is certain areas. Such PPE includes but is not limited to head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision and hearing protective devices. Must comply with OSHA, EPA, Fire Regulations and published Company work rules. Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. However, duties may involve the conduct of work in the out-of-doors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High School graduate or equivalent.

Training in equipment maintenance procedures at the Field and Sustainment level of maintenance.

Must have and maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment.

Must have a Class A or B CDL throughout employment.

Experience: Minimum two years' experience maintaining all variants of the MRAP vehicle and/or completion of the Red River Army Depot MRAP University five week maintenance training course.

CLEARANCE: Must be able to obtain and maintain a NACI when/if required.
